If there’s no Snagg’n there’s always Tagg’n

4/27/09                                          Padres vs Rockies

                       Ranter’s dictionary: Tagg’n = Getting baseballs autographed.

Monday’s game was straight up cold. I was hoping for batting practice but the field was empty other than a few Padres playing catch and doing sprints.

Joy and her husband 4-27-09.jpg

While I was standing there thinking about what I should do next I ran into Joy aka LUVMYROXX and her husband Jim.

RPR and Joy 4-27-09.jpgThis time I was able to take a picture and talk for a little bit.

Really nice folks and it was an honor to meet you both.

Thanks Joy for reading the Rant and being a regular commentor.

I have to say anyone brave enough to attend Monday’s game is a hardcore Rockies fan because it was quite nipply.

It was seriously overcast, the temperature was in the 40′s and a cold gusty wind was hitting us at times.

Great snowbarding weather but it can make watching a baseball game live a bit uncomfortable, especially when those wind gusts hit…brrrr
sky 4-27-09.JPGSo after saying hey to some of the fellas in the first row I grabbed my backpack and headed over to the Rockies dugout to see what I could see.

When I arrived I saw Huston Street walking back to the dugout and before I could even ask he walked over to sign for a small group of fans. I quickly dug out a baseball and slipped into the group.

One thing I have noticed is that if you just hand a player a baseball they will usually not sign on the sweet spot. For me this is true 9 out of 10 times. Robert has been giving me sheet about not asking them to sign on the sweet spot.

He told me “just ask them to sign it on the sweet spot, they will”. So today I tried it.

Huston staring at me4-27-09.jpgI handed Huston Street the pen and baseball and asked “Huston will you please sign my ball on the sweet spot?”.

<——He looked at me with this look  and said, “No, I’m not going to do that, you get it where you get it.

I about crapped my pants. You see the first time I ask I get slammed hard.

Naa I’m totally kidding, Huston Street is a great guy and will sign for anyone.

Here’s why it’s hard for me a to ask a player to sign on the sweet spot. I feel fortunate to just be getting a players autograph, so to be specific on what I want seems a tad rude.

But in reality unless it’s a World Series ball it needs to be signed on the sweet spot.

Its the perfect place for it….See what I mean.
Huston Street autograph 4-27-09.jpg                                                      Thank you Huston !

With luck like this in the first few minutes I figured I’d stay put there and see what unfolds.

So from a Hagger’s point of view the cold dreary day was getting better :)

Robert sanding a baseball 4-27-09.jpg

Robert came over and was demonstrating to me the fine art of removing the word “PRACTICE” from a baseball.

It requires some very light sanding with fine sandpaper and then hitting it with a white eraser.
Close up sanding.jpg

Iannetta signing 4-27-09.jpgNeat stuff. Always pay attention to your elders, they are full of usefull information.

I knew the next player to come out would be Chris Iannetta.

I hopped in line and he signed the baseball Robert was fixing up for me.

I used a batting practice ball because Chris was signing in sharpie and I decided to work on a Team signed baseball mostly because I had only brought one new baseball and one used one.

Huston Street had autographed my new baseball so the only ball I had left was the one Robert fixed up for me.

Bob Apodaca signing 4-27-09.jpg

The next guy out of the dugout was Bob Apodaca.

Bob looked like he was on a mission but when the older fella standing beside me called out his name Bob turned and walked over and started chatting and signing.

         Nice guy, thank you Bob.
Bob Apodaca auto 4-27-09.jpg

No batting practice today but I’ve snagged three autographs. Not bad eh !. It gets better my friends.

Here are the players warming up.
Helton, Hawpe, Stewart 4-27-09.jpg                                                          Mr. Helton

When Todd finished warming up he walked almost all the way to the dugout then he turned turned and walked over to my group.

I couldn’t believe it. I’ve never been able to get Todd’s autograph at Coors Field before and here he was two feet from me.

It was at that point I really wished I had a new baseball for him to sign. Oh well my team baseball was starting to look pretty good now especially with this this guys autograph on it :)
Helton autographed on my team ball 4-27-09.jpgLook at the menacing sky in the background. My team ball is getting some character now.

Barmes autograph 4-27-09.jpg

As Clint Barmes was walking off the field he stopped and spent a few minutes signing for everyone.

Here he is signing my team ball–>

Clint auto on team ball 4-27-09.jpg  When he looked up at me I said, “Clint you tossed me the first batting practice ball of spring training this year”. He looked up at me and said “Yeah I remember you”.

Clint brotha, you don’t know how cool it was to hear you say that.

I’ve always liked Clint Barmes but now not only will the Rant be extra pro-Helton but it will be extra pro-Barmes.  I take special notice when someone takes notice/remembers me.

Thanks for the autograph Clint. Good luck this season, the Rant has got your back.

I managed to get one more autograph but not a picture. Ryan Spilborghs signed the team baseball underneath Clint Barmes.

Spilly was working his way down the line signing with this head down and just before he got to me the guy beside me mentioned something about Robert catching his home run ball the night before.

I then asked Spilly if he had watched the video of it. Spilly said “Yeah I looked at it”. Then I said that I was the guy right behind Robert chasing it. He still didn’t look up. When he got to me he took my baseball, signed it, handed it back to me, stopped slowly, raised his head enough to see my face and acknowledge it, then he moved on down the line.

It wasn’t scary, but it wasn’t a “Cool man, better luck next time” kind of glance either. No worries Spilly, I’m a big fan and I’m glad you’re a part of this team.

We know a lot of the same people so I hope you get used to my face brotha :)

Roberts hand warming secret4-27-09-1.jpgSome notes on this game. Dexter Fowler is amazingly fast. He stole five of the eight bases that were stolen in this game.

Tulo was benched?

Rockies get the win over the Padres 12-7.

I didn’t make it much past the fifth inning. I was cold tired, and had to get up for work at 3am. Had I stayed I’d have been in position to snag a ground rule double.

Let me just say that is not the first time that has happened to me and will surely not be the last. I think of it as the ghosts of baseball past teasing me for leaving my seat or going home early.

It will someday happen to you if you attend enough games. Eventually you’ll need to eat, drink or pee  Precicly at the point that you cannot see your seat is when the baseball will land in your area.

                         Hagg’n totals for this game

1 Point for showing up.

12 Points for six autographs. Huston Street, Bob Apodaca, Todd Helton, Chris Iannetta, Clint Barmes, and Ryan Spilborghs. I couldn’t eat another brat this game.

                                                      Total points = 13

Two wins in a row, I’m digg’n this. Go Rockies…D

Game one down no reason to frown

3/6/09

gameday audio.jpgI’d love to tell you how great it was to watch the first Rockies game of the year but I had to listen to it on MLB Gameday Audio.

We dropped the cable package we had because we’re moving soon and now I can’t watch the game at home anymore.

Let’s just say the game that I heard was a great game. Props to the D-Backs for taking this one. I was proud of the way the Rockies played today and I can’t wait to “see” more.

Brandon Webb was off of his game and Aaron Cook seem to follow suit. Wiith that being the case it was an all out slugfest that didn’t take long to get rolling.

Cook gave up the first home run to Lopez in the first inning. Cook went 2 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and six runs, four of those runs in the third inning,…ouch. On a bright not Cook right now is batting 1000.

Stud of the Rockies for the first game was Brad Hawpe, 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s. Right now Hawpe is batting .750. hawpe prize1.jpg

tulo desk1.jpg
Chris_Iannetta bunt 1.jpg
Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Iannetta both homered in the 4th inning, Seth Smith homered in the 7th. Big Todd went 1 for 4 today.

Not being able to see this game on TV today is my punishment for not being in Phoenix to support my team and see this game live. I try not to question it, I know it’s just some sort  F’ked up charmic balance that keeps me grounded…usually. It sucks because sometimes I just wanna fly.

Congrats to my friend Rick and his wife on the birth of their daughter.

My deepest sympathies got out to my friend Willa on the very recent loss of her husband who had been battling a long illness. She’s a sweet lady and very kind.

The Nuggets/Thunder game with Hunter is on Wednesday and Hunter has come up with a few good questions to ask Carmelo Anthony.

1. What other sports do you like to play?

2. Do you have any pets? (We have two pugs, a puggle and two frogs).

Hunter and I are huge Nuggets fans (if you couldn’t tell from a lot of my previous blog entries), and we’re really looking forward to the entire evening. Hunter is playing basketball in grade 4 this year so he’ll be diggin on all of this.

Crushed.jpgThe Rockpile Rant was eliminated today in the “Max Madness” brackets. Eat, Sleep, Baseball layed the smack down hard.

I’m not sure what the ending totals were, but the last I looked it was like 70/30…Congrats.

Possible rain on the home opener for the Rockies. Who the F’ck knows here.

The weather report changes daily/hourly so I’m just going to hope for no rain and no snow and be ready for anything.

Anybody that’s going to Rockies opening day wanna give a shout out? I’ll take your picture, you know cause that’s what I do.

Tomorrow I’ll post the questions for the Rockies Fan Profile. Anyone want to offer up some last minute good questions? As always I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Go Rockies. Do what you do, I want a win in game two…D

Fun in the sun as I watch game one.

2/25/09 7:35 AM

We’re here parked in front of Hi-Corbett Field. We were told we could have the MBU parked here till 9 AM then we have to move onto the street. No worries, our parking spot on the street was only 20 feet behind where we’re parked now.

We’ve been watching the players pull up. I saw Garrett Atkins and Tulo pull up but I wasn’t ready and only had time to snap a quick picture. Tomorrow I’ll be ready for the early morning meet and greet.

I also saw and Franklin Morales walk through the gates.

11:00 AM

Andy and I were one of the first five people in the stadium when they opened the gates at 11. We proceeded to head over to our seats which were to the right of the Rockies dugout.

Clint Barmes 2-25-09.jpg

I wasn’t standing there a minute when a ball was hit over by me and Clint Barmes scooped it up and tossed it to me.

My side of the story was it was a little short, but after I missed it he walked over and tossed it to me.

Thank you Clint you made this snaggers day.

First BP ball of the season.jpgMy first baseball of the season. What’s even better is that this was the first baseball tossed to a Rockies fan during batting practice this season. I like the sound of that.

Ian Stewart signed my second ball. Thanks Ian !

Tulowitzki, he walked up to where I was standing and started signing, I realized I had grabbed the wrong ball. By the time I had grabbed the right one, he was already moving down the line. Andy didn’t get his autograph either.

Andy’s goal is to get Tulo’s autograph on a visor for his wife.

Here’s Rockies catcher and fellow MLBlogger Michael McKenry

Scoreboard 2-25-09-1.jpgI haven’t done this one in a while but this lady is deserving.

Here it is:                      The most annoying fan of the game.

Sad to say she was a Rockies fan.Her seats were behind us but she and her four children felt they had the right to run around and block our view more times than I cared to count. She was loud, rude and inconsiderate.
most annoying fan.jpg                                        Bask in it lady, next time bring leashes.

Jason Grilli signed a World Series baseball for me.
Jason Grilli 2-25-09.jpgAhh, the first game. It is what it is. The Rockies lost this scorcher to the D-Backs 5-3. Here’s a picture of everything we got today. Sorry to say two of the autographs I’m still trying to figure out who they are.
Autographs 2-25-09.JPG  Here is what I ended up with at the end of the day. Ian Stewart, Ryan Spilborghs, Manual Corpas, James Hirsh, Jason Grilli, Carlos Gonzalez and two more I’m embarassed to say I’m not sure of. One is a coach and one is a minor league pitcher.

We’ll be at Hi-Corbett around 6 AM tomorrow and I’ll have my bat with me a welcoming the players at the gate :)

Perfect 2-25-09.jpgThanks for following the Spring Training version of the Rant..What do you think so far?…D
