Mets vs Rockies
Back at Coors after a not so great road trip.
The sky was ugly but it was warm. I’ll take warm anytime. Batting practice was better than usual for me today and I snagged three ground rule doubles. The first one I’m pretty sure was from Chris Iannetta and as it bounced into the first row I barehanded it.
The second bounced over Robert and Geoff”s head and I had a better spot in the tunnel which put me there first.
The third was a really nice catch off the bounce. All three were given away.
It’s not often I drink something purple but I’ll admit it was pretty good.
The groundkeeper stuck here under the tarp looks like a Teepee. Guys remind you of anything in the morning?
Here are some random pics.
I call this set of pictures:
“Hawaii Bob doin his Job”
“Excuse me sir may I see your tickets?”
Hawaii Bob gives them the boot and sends them on their way with a smile.
Cheers to you Jersey Geoff.
Other than Mike, Robert and I, these were really the only other Rockies fans hanging out after this loss.
That got us a little TV time. Thank you Joy for sending me this.
The first time I’ve ever heard the words Rockpile Ranter uttered on Television and it’s followed by the Cowboy saying I’ve got fleas and Tom saying I’ve got ants in my pants.
No worries, you get what you get when you’re a white boy and you shake your groove thing on TV.
You can expect a different dance now every time the Rockies lose and Mike and I are there postgame
Cheer on your Rockies, believe me you don’t wanna see us dance.
I’m “D” The Rockpile Ranter and this is the purple mohawk dude.
It’s been a while since I logged into MLBlogs and clicked that “Create Entry” button. Now I’m staring into a solid empty white box with a lot to say but I’m having difficulty getting started.
Let me run this at you from the beginning. Last August I was lifting a box at work in the squatting position and as I went to stand up something pulled and my left butt cheek and leg went numb.
As the day progressed the numbness and pain got worse. At the end of my shift I was told to go see the doctor. My doctor figured I had a lower back strain and prescribed a few pain killers and some muscle relaxers (standard procedure).
I was put on light duty and I took it easy at work. As time passed I noticed that sitting and standing for long periods was beginning to become uncomfortable.
During an average Rockies game I’d say I normally stand four to five hours including batting practice. I’ve never had an issue with the prolonged standing at games but now after thirty to forty-five minutes my lower back would start to ache and I would have to sit.
Through the month of September my back issues kept getting worse. My left foot felt and still feels like it’s asleep. It’s a constant half-numb feeling. I started getting this things I call “stingers”. Stingers are deep stabbing pains that I’ve been getting in my hip, quad, calf, butt and foot.
These “stingers” as I call them are totally debilitating as they demand and get your full attention. If I’m driving or riding passenger and a stinger starts doing its thing, I’m looking for a place to pull over immediately and hopping around outside my truck until that f’ker lets loose.
At the beginning of Sept I was averaging 30-40 stingers a day. Now I get them all day long. I can’t sit for more than five minutes because the stingers start tap dancing on my sciatic nerve.
My day consists of sitting, standing and pacing until my lower back gets sore from standing then sitting again. I do get some relief from lying completely flat but eventually my lower back starts to hurt from that position and I have to get up.
It’s hard to sleep because the stingers could care less what time it is.
Still the doctor was convinced that I had a lower back strain. Finally after pleading with him I convinced him to take X-Rays and schedule me for an MRI.
The X-Ray showed absolutely nothing. A week later I was able to get the MRI.
I had another visit with my doctor a few days after the MRI and when I had a chance to say what was going on with me I just vented on the guy.
I told him how miserable it was just existing. I told him how I couldn’t sit, drive, sleep, or do anything. I told him about the severe leg spasms I was having. I told him the pain pills were not working..I layed it all out…”I’m getting worse not better doctor” was the last thing I told him.
My doctor was like “Well I have your MRI results right here let’s see what’s going on”. He opened the envelope and read it and he said,” Well that would explain it”.
I said “What’s it say?”
He reviewed with me the written results as he didn’t have the actual MRI pictures. He explained that according to the MRI results a good size chunk of my L5/S1 disc is severely extruding. The extruding disc has nestled itself nicely up against my nerve and that nestling is the cause of my misery.
The doctor immediately took me out of work, increased my meds and scheduled an appt. with a surgeon.
Fast forward (11/20/10)
My surgery is this Tuesday the 23rd thanks to some cool people who jumped in and helped a brotha out.(Thank you, you know who you are). They plan to remove the extruded piece of my disc, clean up any scraps and hopefully the rest of my disc will tuck back in nicely and I’ll be me again.
Anyways I’ve been out of work almost two months now and anyone that has known me for any period of time knows that I don’t do NOTHING well.
The term “going squirrley” would fit this situation well.
I’ve got an inner energy that drives me I can’t turn it off. However, not having my back and legs fully functional has severely hampered my energy flow. There is nothing worse than wanting to do something and just not being physically able to do it.
This surgery just has to work. Damn right I’m scared, my back is my life and my livelyhood and I’m still too full of pi-ss and vinegar to slow at this point.
If my surgery doesn’t work I’ll have to retire the Ranter and go back to being a regular Rockies fan who watches baseball on a non HD television.
I much prefer the 3-D HD I get at Coors Field.
I showed up for my surgery and all was a go. Unfortunately I had a bad reaction to the meds that were administered before they put me under and went through a ten minute session of “I can’t breathe”. It felt like every breath that I took was getting shorter and I felt like I was suffocating.
After that episode my surgeon was like “Uh, I don’t think we’re going to do the surgery today.”
So as it stands right now my new surgery is at 10:15am on December 1st.
Any positive vibe or thought you can send my way is greatly appreciated.
I dont’ like to end my blog entries on a sad note.
So here are some pictures I’m pretty sure sure not many of you have seen. These pictures were taken by Master Photographer Mike who now has a blog called Rox Addict.
Mike thank you for letting me use these pictures.
These pictures were taken after the final game of the season and is what you would call Rookie hazing…Rockies style I guess?
One of the perks of writing a blog is getting to meet the folks who actually read my Rockies ramblings and enjoy looking at my pictures.
This season I met and got to hang out a little bit with Gary X and his family. In one season Gary and his family have mastered Coors Field.
If I’m correct Gary and family managed to get all of the Rockies signatures in just a few months. At the end of the final game the only missing signature was Troy Tulowitzki.
Gary and family happend to be hanging around after the game checking out the Rockies Rookies in diapers and guess who happend to walk by.
Tulo and the magic mullet.
Gotta love a happy ending.
I’m looking forward to the Pavilion Party at Gunther Toodys in December as I didn’t get to say see ya next season to all my Pavilion friends because I missed the last game of the year.
I’m “D” The Rockpile Ranter…Wednesday’s almost here…Wish a brotha luck…”D”
8/13/10 Brewers vs Rockies Game One
I was shutout but Brad had a good day. He managed to straight up catch one (gave it away to a kid), then wrestled Robert for his second snag.
Here are your Rockies warming-up.
Seth Smith was awarded the Heart Hustle thing.
Looks like he’s trying to tag Tulo.
Smile, you get paid to watch baseball.
This game was starting to seem like another one of those Rockies losses where the Rockies just seem uninterested.
That was until the bottom of the 8th inning .
Tulo steps up to the plate and launches his 11th homerun of the season into left field scoring three. Ryan Braun came damn close to catching that ball at the wall.
Huston Street is money in the ninth and the
Rockies take game one of this three game series.
Rockies 5….Brewers 4
Welcome Back Tulo, we need you bad brotha.
My next entry is will be tomorrow when I’ll present to you the winner of the….

9/1/09 Mets vs Rockies Game 1
If you’ve never smoked before and you live in the front range of Colorado you were a smoker yesterday. The smoke from the California fires was thick and for once there wasn’t any rain to wash it away.
Hunter was with me today and we were ready for some batting practice. The weather has been cruel to us this season as far as batting practice goes.
I looked over and saw Hunter running up to me all excited. He had just found his first Coors Field Easter egg.
Easter Egg = A ball just lying there when you get inside.
The ball was lying at the base of the pavilion and he was the first to stumble across it.
I’ve yet to find an easter egg.
I’m sure the Rockies knock several baseballs into the pavilion before they open the gates for Coors Field. I wonder what happens to those baseballs?
Do the Ushers keep them?
I’d be ok with that. Ushers stand for hours and get paid minimally.
Or do they just toss them back onto the field?
Maybe, if I ever discover the answer I’ll let you know. Another one of baseball’s mysteries.
As for me…”The Pavilion Poacher, “The Sultan of Snatch” I got diddly squat. I had play on several homers but the dude who initially adopted my spot ended up with my two.
I’ve noticed that none of you have commented on my hair I’m growing it for several reasons.
1. The economy. Haircuts are expensive.
2. I live in Nederland, it’s ok here.
3. Helton hasn’t cut his so I’m following his trend.
Thanks for not asking. I’ll be sure and keep you posted,…frequently
The DEA is on to me so I’ve been having trouble finding quality crack for the “Coors Field Crack of the Game”. So I’ll have fill-in awards until more “Crack” is discovered.
The next award is for the “Best Costume of the Game“. This dude was in the pavilion with a suit on. I can’t tell you how wrong that is.
Next thing you know you’ll have the likes of me sitting in Club Level..ewwww!
The tag on his shirt says “Tip me or die of thirst”. To quote
Earth’s own words…”Aint no sissy sippin here” :)
The moon and stars were aligned tonight and the Rockies get the win over Mets at Coors in front of 26,190.
The majority of the crowd here tonight were glad to see this win.
Oh here’s one more…I call this video the “Coors Field Sprinkler Guy“.
It’s my job to keep you aware of the freaks of society…I love my job.
My name is D The Rockpile Ranter. Coors Field is my 2nd home and nobody is safe.
GIANTS VS ROCKIES GAME 1
Today game was the official debut of the “New Ranter Hat”. If you follow this blog you know that the Rockies gave away 15,000 floppy hats similar to mine a few weeks back.
No worries it was time to change things up a little bit.
My friend Pete and I arrived at the Rockpile gate and were one of the first few through the gates.
We were to meet Scott and Stuart inside after batting practice. The Rockies decided not to take advantage of the beautiful weather and let the Giants take over the field.
In hindsight, they Rockies probably should have taken the opportunity and “Been on the Green”.
Today I ran into Kylie the infamous “Blake Street Blogger. I knew she would be attending this game and it wasn’t hard to spot her right up front in the Pavilion.
It was obvious that she was excited to be at Coors Field because she was beaming.
Welcome to Colorado Kylie, and your new home away from home Coors Field :)
I knew Joy (aka LUVMYROX) would be at this game too. I spotted her to my left taking pictures.
Below is the picture Joy took of me taking a picture her taking a picture of me. Thanks Joy :)
I managed to snag one ball today. It hit the bleachers in between a group of people and rolled down three rows right to me.
It was a perfect baseball and it was Kylie’s.
I ran into Geoff, he had the good seats today and he was showing off his snag of the day.
By the end of the first inning Cook had given up three runs.
Cook’s shoulder started to hurt and Tracy pulled him after walking Nate Schierholtz to open the fourth.
Props to Seth Smith for his 10th homer of the season in the 8th.
This loss hurt, I can hear my friend Todd (the guy have the Rockies/Giants season long bet with) in the distance. He is laughing at me and he sounds like Nelson from the Simpsons.
Rockies I can’t have that. I need a win tonight and so do you.
I have the best readers and I appreciate every one of you…D
7/10/09 Braves vs Rockies Game 2
Today Hunter and I went to the game with Andy (from spring training) and his son Hazen. This was Hazen’s first batting practice and we were all excited for him.
They usually fit me until the third wash or so.
When we hit the pavilion I headed to my usual spot and within a few minutes Chris Iannetta hit the first BP homer and I tracked it perfectly and made a beautiful catch.
It felt good to catch that ball. I then focused my attention over to Andy, Hazen and Hunter.
I was watching a ball that was hit over by Robert’s area and he snagged it off the bounce. Robert turned around and gave that ball to Hazen.
Here is the poor video of it:
That would be one of two baseballs Robert gave to Hazen. Robert…. Andy told me to say thanks for doing that for his boy.
Andy and Hunter were shutout for BP. Hunter told me it was because he was helping Hazen get his
Me, I had one more opportunity for a toss up.
Normally I don’t raise my glove for toss-ups but they were having fun so I figured what the hell.
Here is video of Seth Smith tossing up a ball:
When Spilly finally tossed one to my area I took a few steps to my right and was positioned perfect for the catch.
I looked behind me real quick (something I do now thanks to BP blockers), and noticed I was positioned in front of a dad and his son who were in the row behind me.
I had a flash of guilt, and backed off leaving the catch for the dad so he could be a hero in front of his son. He bobbled it and somebody else snapped it up.
In hindsight I should have just caught the damn thing and gave it to his kid.
Here’s Dexter Fowler at batting practice with Baylor checking things out.
Here is Todd Helton hang outside of the dugout watching the game.
That sucks, I hope Embree heals and can continue next season. He was doing pretty good for the Rockies lately and that’s a sheety way for a players season to end.
Here are some random pictures.
Barmes at bat.
One more shot of the gang today.
We debated waiting around after the the rain delay was called but Andy and I had worked that day and I was exhausted. So we bailed and in the end didn’t miss much other than Embree taking a line drive to the leg and ending his season.
Rockies lose this one to the Braves 4-1.
I hate losing to the Braves at home…D
I’m not sure what I expected of the Rockies in Game two vs the Phillies. I know the twenty run old fashioned butt whoopin they bent over for the night before didn’t set well with them or this Rockies fan.
Maybe I expected them to come out fresh and ready to strike back. Putting the game last night behind them.
He’s now 1 and 10 in his starts.
Maybe, I wanted the Rockies the show the Phillies in Philidelphia that the magical run last year wasn’t a fluke, and …..well none of that happened.
Rockies lose two straight to the Phillies with a final score of 7-4.
Blame it on the rain..You know when it rains it freggin pours.
On a positive note…..Garrett Atkins is back in the lineup.
He went 1 for 5, and finished pain free.
Welcome back Garrett!!
Seth Smith went 3 for 5, and continues to show us why he doesn’t work in Colorado Springs anymore.
Keep it up Seth,..carve your niche while you have the opportunity
<—-Remember the pinball machine Slugfest?
LET ME TELL YOU WHAT I NEED..A Colorado Rockies, bottom of the 9th two out slugfest.
You Know What I’m Talking About !!
I was also thinking about those Mets fans at the game yesterday that heckled the Rockies ALL game long right behind me.
A win today would be sweet justice.
I had the chance to attend every Rockies game last week while my wife and kids were in Phoenix.
I didn’t dare even ask if I could go today.
The hard part is that it’s Autograph Sunday and I hate missing the chance to adding a new autograph to the collection. Hate it.
Seth had some timely pinch hits in the World Series run last year. Yesterday was the first Major League game he has ever started and today Smith hit a homer and drove in 3 runs. Nice way to make an entrance Smith, keep it up brotha. I’m impressed.
Props to Aaron Cook, nice job pitching the Rockies first complete game this year.
Rockies win this one 4-1 and take 2 of 3 in this series against the Mets.
Jorge De La Rosa will be on the mound tomorrow against the Phillies.
This kid is amazingly calm and poised. I have high hopes for this guy. Tomorrow will be a really good opportunity for him to make us believers…Good Luck Jorge!
Matt Holliday, Willy Taveras, Clint Barmes…Heal up quick…we need you guys healthy. Last thing we want to do is start to slip too far behind. Should be an interesting 10 game road trip.
I’m excited about the next set of home games because Hunter will get to walk around the track on Coors Field June 10 with his baseball team the Scorpions.
He and probably 1000 other little baseball players.
All of them in their baseball uniforms. I really think that is cool of the Rockies to let the kids do that. That’s a memory that will stick with him forever.
I was able to do the same thing inside Yankee Stadium when I was in Grade 3 in New Jersey for being a Safety Patrol all school year long.
Hunter and I will be at batting practice for the game against the Giants on June 10th.
