Opening Day at Coors Field.

OD Banner

Let’s just say it’s been a long winter and if you live in Colorado, …it ain’t over yet.

Colorado does Opening Day right. Right in the fact that you don’t need a ticket to the game to enjoy the festivities, just show up early ready to party. The weather was 70 degrees and perfect for April baseball.

20th street Cafe

The day started out with Douglas’s breakfast at the 20th St Cafe as it has for the last few Opening Days. In attendance were, Jersey Geoff, Mike the Rox Addict…

JG and RA OD 13

Fran and Robert.

R and F od 13

Our host Douglas, Hunter and yours truly. On an extremely cool note, I only eat at the 20th St. Cafe once or twice a year and the waitress remembered what my breakfast order was.

That’s impressive!

Once we were full it was time to wander. Although there were a lot of folks hang’n around Coors Field, this OD seemed a bit mellower than ones I’ve attended in the past. Still there was lots going on.

Hunter and I stopped by and checked out my favorite local Artist Kyle Banister. Kyle had a primo spot for his art and was working on the Rockies 20th Anniversary logo in liquid chalk. :)

Here’s Kyle Banister, Laura Rector, Eric Matelski working hard.

Hunter and I met up with long time Rockies employee and Rant follower Missy. 15 years with the Rockies right Missy?

As we walked by the 850 KOA booth I noticed Goose Gossage and David Nied getting interviewed by Mike Rosin.

Goose 850 KOA OD13

I have Goose’s autograph already but I was carrying a poster I wanted the “Nied for Speed” David Nied to sign. We waited around for a bit, but I figured I’d have better luck inside on Sunday acquiring Nied’s autograph.

Batting practice was taking place and as Hunter and I entered the pavilion a hit baseball had just rolled up to the wall. Matt Belisle picked it up, looked up and saw Hunter standing there and tossed it to him. Within a minute of entering the stadium Hunter had the first BP ball of the regular season.

Hunter managed to snag one more and his old man came up empty for Opening Day.

Before BP ended I met up with my a friend and co-worker Kevin and his daughter Sam. This was their first Opening day at Coors and you could tell they were happy to be there just soaking everything in.

Rockies Opening Day at Coors Field

Giants vs Rockies

As it has for the last couple of seasons Opening Day starts off with breakfast at the 2oth Street Cafe with a small group of the Rantics.

Left to Right are Mike the Rox Addict, Gary X, Alannah X, Rick, Amy, Drugless Douglas and Jersey Geoff.

The only plan this morning was to try to get Dante Bichette’s autograph before heading into Coors Field for the first batting practice of the season.

Last time I saw Dante he was a bald, not today. Dante was signing autographs and promoting Maxx HD sunglasses.

Dante was cool as a former Bomber should be and was signing multiple items for everyone.

Dante signed a game rubbed baseball for me.

Maybe someday I’ll run into Larry Walker and Andres Gallaraga and I’ll be able to finish up my Blake Street Bomber autograph collection.

I didn’t know at the time but meeting Dante would be the highlight of this day.

Check out the Patio Ride…Yeah I’d rent it, but only if I run that sucker downhill :)

Lot’s of Rockies fans gett’n their drink on early on the rooftop.

Batting practice was a total bust. I’ve noticed at times when the Rockies hit really well during BP they hit well during the game. BP today was pitiful and I was hoping that wasn’t an indication of what the game was gonna be like. The pavillion pre-game was packed full of purple Rockies fans hoping to catch a souvenir.

Sorry folks, it’s not going to happen today. Your chances of getting beaned in the head by a stray foul ball were much better. Just ask the lady along the third base line celebrating her 69th birthday at Coors Field. She managed to snag a ball today, the one that cracked her skull.

That’s the first time I can remember seeing a fan hauled off from the field. Normally Paramedics would just carry them up the stairs.

I heard later that the elderly lady beaned in the head was recovering and was going to be ok. That’s cool,  a happy ending and a helluva story for her to tell the grandkids.

Unfortunately a trend I’m not liking is continuing from last year. The Rockies ended their BP early thus depriving their fans of the only half-hour they get to watch their team take swings.C’mon Rockies, we wait in line in the hot sun so we can come inside and watch you take swings.

We’re allowed a measly half-hour to do this and you end practice 10-15 minutes early?

Listen, I’m not telling the Rockies what to do, I’m just giving them some insight into how fans think.

Graphmaster Gary X hold’n down the front row as per usual.

Mike the Rox Addict and Amy from “The Take from Blake”.

As an old buddy of mine used to say…That’s a crap-ton of balloons.

Matt Belisle giving us a wave.

The ceremonial first pitch times three.

Tulo was presented his Silver Slugger and Gold Glove award from 2011.

Here are the game pictures I took.

Amy and Jersey Geoff chill’n.

My favorite picture of the day and one of the hardest to get. Cargo breaking his bat with the ball in the picture.

Zito was straight up money today and the Giants embarrass the Rockies on their Home Opener 7-0.

After the beating was over Mike, Gary X, Alannah and I headed over to where the post-game show is broadcast. We said we would do the “Bring Back Helmer” chant and we did.

Here’s the first video. You can see us in the background.

In this video you can hear us chanting “Bring Back Helmer” in the background as the Cowboy is talking.

Here is where I walk up to the wall(you can see my hat) and told them:

“I supported you and you let Helmer go for no good reason, I supported you Root Sports. You ain’t about the fan, You aint about the fan.”

After I finished the cops that were standing there waved me on.

The best video of all was Allannah X. She was able to get close up and got out a “Bring Back Helmer. Nice job Alannah!

We did what we could for Tom Helmer. He’s a great guy and he deserved folks standing up for him for the gutless way Poot Warts let him go.

Hindsight being 20/20, a big ole’ sign would have done wonders :)

Let me state for the record, I like all of the rest of the broadcasters in the Poot Warts line-up although I haven’t watched Joel much as I’m boycotting the Post-Game going forward.

The protest had absolutely nothing to do with any of you, it was a protest against your employer. We were standing up and making a statement for a friend who was wronged by a company that claims to be about “The Fan”, but in reality doesn’t give a shit about “The Fan”, simple as that.

I’m “D” The Ranter and let me reiterate, meeting Dante Bichette was the highlight of this day, but it’s nice to know Rockies fans are taking Purple Mondays seriously :)

Go Rockies…You’re better than this…”D”

Opening day at Coors Field. I missed it last year because I had to work and this year I was twice as ready to soak in the festivities.Rockies fans everywhere OD 2011.jpgBlake Street OD 2011.jpgMy day started out with a 10am breakfast at the 20th Street Cafe with Pete, Robert, Geoff, Mike(not in the picture because he was late), and Douglas..
Breakfast OD 2011.jpgThis breakfast is a tradition for Douglas but for the majority of us it was our first time attending. Nothing wrong with starting a big day out with a great breakfast and mine was pretty tasty. Biscuts and Gravy with a side of hash browns..Mmmm.

Douglas mentioned this is his 30th consecutive Opening Day..That’s impressive!

I really like hanging with these guys. We’re all from totally different backgrounds but we click because we’re all baseball freaks in our own special way.

I know it sounds bad but after breakfast Geoff, Pete and I headed over to The Falling Rock Tap House to have a beer and just observe the goings on.

Falling Rock Tap House OD 2011.jpgThat’s where I bumped into John. I first met John at Kaufman Stadium last year. He was doing the same thing we were just checking stuff out.
John Opening Day 2011.jpgThese guys were from the Radio Statiion Alice 105.9 and were going around to fans and asking them to fill out a survey. Camera Crew OD.jpgThe survey was just a list of potential new names for the Rockies…They said that at the end of the season the Rockis were going to choose a new name and they had a list of ten or so names such as The Trout, The Miners, really stupid names.

They asked me to rank them in the order I liked them and I kind of stood there for a moment and then I said “I can’t rank these they all suck” The guy kept at me to just choose and finally I just told him “Dude I can’t choose any of these”.

It was then they said where they were from Alice 105.9 and yelled “April Fools”.

                                              Stupid but kinda funny.

After we finished our beer we wandered some more and I bumped into loooong time Rantic and Rockies employee my friend and fellow MLBLogger Missy.

ROOT SPORTS OD 2011.jpgWe joked and said if this guy was the man he would have had a ticket already. We later saw him inside Coors field.

Apparently he is Da Man, totally my bad.

U Da Man OD 2011.jpgBatting practice was a bust for me. I managed to get some play but the 1/4 inch I lost in height from my back surgery was the key factor in missing two balls by that exact amount.

                                              That’s my story anyway :)

Me and Mike Post Game OD 2011.jpgA while back I mentioned in an entry that I heard a rumor that Bud Selig would be at the opening of Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. I believe I mentioned I though his autograph would be a cool one to add to the collection.

Tom Helmer wrote me a few days later and told me he could get me Selig’s autograph. Apparently The Cowboy and Bud Selig are good friends. So when ran into Tom in Scottsdale I gave him a new baseball just in case.

I kind of forgot about it until a couple of days before Opening Day at Coors Field. Tom sent me an email and said that Ringolsby got Selig to sign the ball for me and he would give it to me on Opening day.

                                                        Well he did.

Today Colorado Rockies tickets went on sale at the ticket windows at Coors Field. This is the day when a little patience pays off big. It was a bit chilly but the forcast for today was was mid 50′s.
Rockies Balloon.jpg The way the Rockies work it is you choose a wristband that’s numbered between 101 and 499. The 100′s represent line one, 200′s line two, etc. Then the second set of numbers decides your position in line.

Line 3.jpg                  Mylee pulled the best numbered wristband of the three of us #313.
Mylee 313.jpg Her wristband put us in Row 3 in the 13th spot. Actually there were only six people in front of us so we were sixth in that line.

Line 1-4.jpgThen the Rockies staff placed four baseballs inside a bag numbered 1-4. A little girl was chosen from the crowd to pick out the numbered baseballs. The order in which the baseballs were picked decided which of the fours row gets to line-up in front of the ticket windows first.

The little girl picked Row 3 first(sweet), so we were were one of the first six fans at the ticket window.
Little girl picking the line sequence.jpg The Rockies were thoughtful and provided hot chocolate for everyone standing in line.

HOt chocolate.jpg Once the line sequence had been determined the Rockies staff march each individual row over to the ticket window where we waited about ten minutes for the windows to open.

Here’s the long line of folks patiently waiting for their time at the window.
Standing in line for tix.jpg                               As always Dinger was around to help pass the time.

And all of the Bobblehead games which are on:

Rockies Take Game One, I Miss The Fun

4/9/10

Here was my view of the first pitch of the first home game at Coors Field in 2010.

my tv.jpg

In order to to be able to purchase opening day Rockies tickets you had to enter your email address into a drawing. My email was actually chosen but midway through the purchase I wanted to change the amount of tickets I was going to purchase and when I re-entered my “Special Code” it said the code was no good.

It upset me so I said “F’ck it”

Mistake, I should have been there. I felt it all day. Everyone at work was like “What are you doing here, shouldn’t you be downtown?”

All I can say is it won’t happen again, althought it seems the Rockies did just fine without me.

Excellent game one of this series. I loved the fact that Clint Barmes hits a three run homer in the first home game of 2010.

Clint has a knack for things like that.
Clint Barmes dirty.jpg        I believe that’s just a small sampling of what we’ll see from Barmes this season.

Jorge De La Rosa was amazing. As long as he stays healthy he’s gonna own the National League.Jorge pitch'n.jpg

I’m getting my stuff together now, I’ll be there tomorrow with Hunter,… Second row pavilion.

Phillies pay on Rockies Opening Day

4/10/09

Opening day sign 4-10-09.jpgIncredible, what a day! On my way to Coors Field I realized I forgot my glove. No joke, the first game and I left my glove at home. I turned around and went back and got it. I figured for sure that I’d blown my chance at a good place in line but lady luck was on my side.

line of people Rockpile.jpgWe arrived at Coors about 11:10 AM and the gates opened at 12:00 PM.

As we were walking up I could see a huge line of people and my heart sunk. Upon closer inspection I realized the line was for people waiting to hopefully purchase Rockpile tickets.

We already had our tickets so my day was looking real good as there was nobody in line at the Rockpile gates. Always plan ahead you’ll be glad you did.
First in line 4-10-09.jpg

Number one like it should be.

They opened the gates and I was the first one through, As I worked my way over to the Pavilion I saw the Rockies out on the field and when I entered the bleachers I could only see one kid way on the other side of the Pavilion.

I worked my way down to field level and saw Jorge De La Rosa, Ubaldo Jimenez and Franklin Morales in the outfield chatting. A ball was hit to them and Jorge picked it up.

He looked into the bleachers and the only one standing there was me. I held up my glove, didn’t say a word and he tossed it to me. Just like that the Hagg’n begins.

Thanks Jorge for starting my season out right. Before Jorge tossed me that ball Helton had hit a BP homer and a kid had snagged it. The ball Jorge tossed me was the first baseball tossed to a fan at Coors Field this seaon. I also hold the honor of snagging the first baseball tossed to a fan during Game 1 of Rockies spring training in Tucson.

Not a huge thing but worth mentioning I figure.

RPR opening day 09.jpgThe second baseball I snagged was kind of embarassing.

You know that fan that goes way overboard chasing a ball and winds up looking like an idiot.

I was that fan.

I was tracking a BP homer and had to lean over a row of bleachers and extend as far as I could to snag it. The ball hit my glove then rolled out and started rolling down the stairs.

I started stumbling over the bleachers in an attempt to snag that ball I dropped. About half way through chasing that ball I realized that I looked like a total moron.

So what do I do in that situation?

Do I stop right then and try and save my dignity, or realizing that I already looked stupid follow through and get the ball so I can say yeah I looked stupid but at least I got the ball?

I’m a Hagger so I chose to get the ball and take my critism. Nobody was harmed in the pursuit of the baseball, just my ego. Plus there’s always a witness when you don’t need one.

Anyways, that was ball two, Hagg’n is on baby.

While at batting practice I ran in to Marianne aka R-Luv, she was Hagg’n big and bad. She was going around getting pictures of the Ushers earning her Hagg’n points.

Here she is below taking pictures of her son with an Usher.

Chuck rode up from Colorado Springs in the Coors Light RV. I’ve known this guy for over twenty years.

Here is Chuck and my wife Krista in front of the RV.

Chuck and Krista 4-10-09.jpg I need to say something to all those who predicted that the Rockies will come in 4th in our division.

I hope your squirming in your pants over your prediction. I’m not saying that the Rockies won’t come in 4th place, that could totally happen. But I love the fact that the Rockies have everyone who made that prediction thinking twice about the Rockies right now.

Congrats to Marquis, goes to show you what a Veteran can do when called upon to get the job done.

I have 400 more pictures I could post but I’m going to save them for “Rockpile Ranter’s PIcture Blog”

Now to my Hagg’n score for the day.

Showing up for the game = 1 point.

Two snagged baseballs, one which bounced out of my glove and was snagged rolling down the steps = 3 points.

my two 4-10-09.jpg                              One toss up from Jorge De La Rosa = 2 points.

Final Scoreboard 4-10-09.JPG

As shot of the scoreboard at the end of the game = 1 point.

Total for the game = 7 points.

I’m still working on how to count pictures of Ushers. It’s not hard to take pictures of Ushers but getting a picture of you with an Usher is hard because you have to ask someone else to take the picture. I might need some help with this.
