Rain is a pain but Rockies still take the Game
6-11-10 Blue Jays vs Rockies Game One
Weather: 58 degrees, cloudy.
Wind: 8 mph, In from RF.
Time: 1:55 (2:25 delay).
Attendance: 31,101
My friend Todd and I have been trying to attend a game together for a long time.![]()
“T”s the guy I had the Rockies/Giants bet with last year.
One bet turned into two bets. The most wins between each team overall(loser had to wear the other’s jersey for a day), and most wins when the Giants and Rockies face each other(loser had to cook hot dogs for the people we work with).
I won the overall and he won between our two teams.
We settled on Todd wearing a Rockies jersey for this Rockies game and I would buy him a hot dog at the game. Todd has been staying away from meat and up to today it’s been a month since the man has eaten any beef.
I convinced him to eat a Denver Cheesesteak during the game instead of a hot dog. He totally killed it.
Both bets are now paid off. We do not have a bet going for this season.
Todd and I hooked up after I got off work and headed for the downtown for a drink and a bite to eat. Upon walking up to the “Old Blake Street Tavern” we discovered it was closed and was re-opening today at 3pm in it’s new location just up the street.
At this point it was 2:55 so we waited
Here are a few shots of the inside:

We asked about food and drink specials but were told there were none as this was their opening week??
Great atmosphere, very cool staff, great place to go before or after the game or to watch a game. While we were having a bite to eat and waiting for batting practice it started seriously raining. It lasted thirty minutes or so and then the clouds seemed to break up.
At that point we headed over to the Rockpile gates to get in line for batting practice.
First in line that is. Well we were until we found out that batting practice had been cancelled five minutes before we were set to go inside(we then bailed). The sad part of that was the sun was out and it was some of the best weather we had seen all day.
When we finally entered Coors Field it was still somewhat sunny. All systems were go.
The beer was ready.
But dammit the infield tarps were out.

Everything was wet.
The game gets rain delayed before it starts to rain. We all knew it was coming.

Dan and Emily.
Another interesting Rockies outfit.
Because of ”T” we have a “Coors Field Crack of the Game” “T” spotted it.
Dancing in the rain.
Todd and the foul pole next to our seats.
The rain literally came down in sheets.
We ran into Robert and hung out for a while over by the Rockpile. Out of nowhere John walks up and hands Robert a game rubbed game baseball.
We were all like WTF?? Then John explained that he had read about Robert’s run of bad luck snagg’n lately on the Rant and he wanted to help a brotha out.
We all got a good laugh out of that.
Robert kept the ball and spent the next hour bragg’n how he was the only one to snag a baseball today. It’s true, that ball counts.
I like that John, keep up the good work.
With the weather delay in full effect Robert, Todd and I headed back to the Blake Street Tavern to ride out the storm. Forty-five minutes later we heard the game was starting so we marched back to Coors and stood on the concourse waiting for the rain to stop.
It never really fully stopped raining so we headed down to our wet seats anyway. Here’s Todd and another fan sporting two teams stuff who sat beside us.
In the second inning Todd Helton hit a foul ball along the first baseline. I stood up and that ball was sailing right for me. At the last second it curved into the seats directly to the left of me and hit one of the chairs and bounced down.
There were a few seconds of chaos and in the end the guy sitting next to me with the red arrow above his head scored the ball.
Had he not been sitting there I would have gloved that foul ball easily. That was fun.
In the third inning Aaron Hill hit a home run to left field. I mention to Todd that it looked like Robert had snagg’d that ball. Five minutes later Robert called me and I said “Did you see me miss that Todd Helton foul ball by a foot?”
Robert yelled at me “No, did you see me get robbed of that Hill home run ball?”
I said, “What?” Robert excitedly informed me that after he had posession of the home run baseball another guy swiped the ball from his hands.
Here is Robert’s side of the story in his own words:
Here’s a picture of the guy who went home with that ball. This picture was taken and labeled by Robert.
Here’s the link to the video: Aaron Hill’s Two Run Homer.
I really didn’t take any game pictures because it was raining so hard and cameras are expensive.
Here are some video clips from the game.
Spillborghs solo homer in the second.
Gonzalez’s solo homer in the fifth.
Great day, strange weather. In the end they call the game after 6 innings and the Rockies get the win 5-3 over the Blue Jays. By the time Todd and I made it to the truck I was soaked head to toe.
One thing I’m learning about Ubaldo is he likes to pitch in warmer weather. Cold or rain has the ablility to throw him off his game.
Quote from Ubaldo : It wasn’t easy to be out there. I didn’t have any feel for any of my pitches, even my fastball. I was trying to throw hard and I couldn’t. … The ball just slipped out my fingers most of the time. Everything was wet. I couldn’t push off the mound.”
My next entry will be about the upcoming ”Bloggers without Borders” during the Rockies/Red Sox game on Tuesday, June 22nd. I will swap places with “Dr Rocker” writer of Sox Rocker which is his Red Sox blog.
Also…. If you haven’t seen the very cool email from Mark Strittmatter in the last Rant entry you should go back and read it.
I’m “D” The Rockpile Ranter here to tell you that I still hate the rain, still love the Rockies and every now and then wish they would have put a retractable roof on Coors Field.
Thanks to “T” for a great day.
GO ROCKIES…”D”

Remember a few weeks back I did an entry about Robert Harmon and his girlfriend Bennie who rolled their VW Bus named “Jim Morrison” in New Mexico?
Here are a few pictures in case you missed it or forgot. ![]()
![]()
Not a pretty sight.
Both walked away virtually unharmed. “Jim” however was wee bit f’cked up. Once the bus was turned upright Robert was able to get “Jim” running and hobbled him back to Colorado…Amazing.
I visited Robert shortly before he left for Rockies Spring Training in Tucson and was amazed at how much better “Jim” looked. Most of the dents were banged out and he had replaced the windshield.
I received an email from Robert this morning that contained a few pictures from Tucson and more importantly Hi-Corbet Field and the Rockies.
Below is a shot of ‘Jim” looking all pretty. Well..Ok here’s a shot of “Jim” in front of Hi-Corbett Field. A testament to a well built automobile and a cheap thrifty VW bus lover.
Props to Robert for making it out there and representing..And for sending these pictures for us to check out. With a little luck, I’ll have my VW bus ready to roll, by Spring Training 2011.

Here’s a shot of the scoreboard at the beginning of Game 2. Temperature 56 degrees![]()
Waiting for the first pitch in Game 2.![]()
Game 2 Final Score 4-1 Rockies win. Temperature 45 degrees…Brrr![]()
So as far as Spring Training goes if you’re a baseball fan it’s not how you get there it’s just that you get there.
If I was there yesterday I would have had to watch that painful 9-2 loss to the Giants who seem to have everybodys number lately…Go figure…The Giants…WTF?
I have an idea…Sort of a “Pitch Your Team” mini-commercial.
I mentioned in a blog entry a while back how I thought it would be a cool idea to let MLBloggers do little promotional spots on MLB TV to promote their team. You know what I mean…Those little 5-10 second clips where they say “I’m so and so and your watching such and such”.
MLBloggers could do the same thing..Like…Mine might be something like..”I’m D the Rockpile Ranter and this is Rockies Country“..I would never use something quite that dorky but you get what I’m saying.
Participants could do this clip however they wanted…and it would be judged here on the Rant by a voting poll inserted into an entry.
Or…Maybe someone from MLBlogs.com would be interested in judging the entries?
Time to let your team loyalty and personal creativity shine. There is absolutely no promises that MLB will/would ever use these video clips but you never know right?
Show the world and your Team what you’ve got. I’m gonna let this contest run for a while..At least until the All-Star Break. That way everyone will have time to get their ideas together and maybe shoot some footage from their favorite ballpark to include in the video clips.
I think it would be cool to have two contests.
One for MLBloggers and one for readers of the Rockpile Rant. The winners will each win an autographed ball and mini-bat from various Colorado Rockies.
Remember folks these do not have to be Rockies video clips.
YOUR VIDEO SHOULD SUPPORT YOUR TEAM.
Let me know if you’re interested in participating in Pitch Your Team.
I think this could be fun.

RPR Cooking with Grease on the Hot Stove
2/3/10
What a day. I’m still feeling the effects of this flu and woke up this morning about 6am with my back aching from sleeping the previous twenty hours. The “feeling like sh-it” hits in waves and today it’s about 50/50.
Anyways I checked my email this morning and there was an email from Tom Reese of HotStove.com. He was sending out a question to Rockies Bloggers regarding Jason Marquis.
The question was:
Did the Rockies make a mistake in allowing Jason Marquis to leave via free agency? The club doesn’t seem to have an heir apparent ready to take his spot in the rotation.![]()
Great question. I was foggy headed when I replied with my answer but to my surprise it was printed at along with another Rockies Blogger that I’ve never heard of.
Click here to see the article: RPR on HotStove.com.
Kind of neat to be quoted talking about your favorite sport. Believe me I’m not bragging just sharing
I’ll know I’ve made it when Alana Rizzo from FSN is kind enough to interview me

On a different note, Krista and I have been known to show Hunter and Mylee music videos from the 80′s. We do this so they understand exactly why we looked like we did back then and because every now and then you just need a good laugh.
A few weeks ago we showed them Twisted Sisters video of ”We’re not gonna take it” and they fell in love with it. After watching it at least a hundred times the kids decided they wanted to try and copy the video.
If you’ve never seen the original video here it is:
Now here is Hunter and Mylee’s version.
I think they did a great job.
Along with the email from Tom Reese this morning was an email from my friend and long time Rockies fan Robert Harmon. It was a short email stating that he and Bennie were ok and he included a few pictures of what was left of his VW bus affectionately known as”Jim Morrison”.

What now Robert, a rental car for the trip to Tucson for Spring Training?..Glad you and Bennie are ok. That was scary.
FYI- I can legally marry people in the State of Colorado. I’ve got two under my belt and they’re both still married.
How cool would it be to marry someone at Coors Field this season?
Who wants to be the first to get married by the Rockpile Ranter during a baseball game?
Thanks for your click…D The Rockpile Ranter![]()
Could it be…The Ranter on TV?
4/26/09
After it all happened I figured I might be on TV. Props to Robert for snaggin Spilborgh’s home run ball in the third inning. Spilborghs is his favorite Rockies player.
Robert was sporting Spilly’s Jersey and immediatly after he snagged that home run ball Spilly’s dad called Robert on his cell phone.
Don’t believe me,… look how happy this old man is.
Robert asked me later how close I was to him when he snagged that ball and I told him if he had stopped any shorter we’d have known each other too well.
Good job Robert, the dude is quick. Next time I’ll sit on the other side of him.
Click on the link below and check out the video of it all:
Rockpile Ranter on TV/ Roberts snag of Spilly’s home run
I know I didn’t get the ball but at least I didn’t look like a chump my first time on TV

Today I was the first in line at the Rockpile gate and things were as they should be in Rockie land.
First in line at the gate puts me first into the Pavilion.
When the batting cages are out it gives me an extra few minutes before the place starts to crawl with people.
As you can tell from this picture, first didn’t mean much today.
No cages = No batting practice
Here is a shot of Dan and Robert politely discussing one of yesterday’s batting practice snags
Something about somebody stepping on somebody’s foot if I remember correctly?
I was lucky again today and Dan hooked me up with a Row 1 ticket. This enabled me to go onto the field during the autograph session. I’ve never done this before and let me tell you it was beyond cool.
Check out the video of me entering the field:
I love this picture of the field this is from the roped off dirt area we were in behind home plate.
Here’s one with me in it.
I managed to get four autographs today.
On the left is Jason Hammel and on the right is Ryan Speier.
![]()
![]()
Manny Corpas came out and signed for a few people then split.
Ubaldo Jimenez also came out and signed for the whole group.
I skipped Ubaldo because I have him already. I was able to give him a knuckle bump and wish him good luck this year. Nice guy.
The other two autographs I snagged were Franklin Morales and Jason Grilli.
![]()
I got to see Todd Helton and Tulo, they popped out to say hi to a few kids and take some pictures.![]()
Ubaldo took a few pictures before he signed autographs.![]()
Here is Jason Hammel coming up to sign for us.
Looks like Jason will get his first start for the Rockies on Monday’s game against the Padres.
Good luck Jason!
Here’s what the Rockpile looks like essentially from where the batter stands.
Here is Jason Grilli signing my baseball, check out the lady in the background ![]()

Todd Helton making one lucky kids year.
Manual Corpas signing the baseball of the little boy next to me
Here is the video of me leaving the field and walking back inside of Coors Field.
In the video below Robert and I were almost to the Pavilion when I heard someone call out “Rockpile Ranter”. That someone was Missy from “View from the Rockpile”.
Missy is an Usher at Coors Field and was on her way to Gate E when we ran into her. This was the first time her and I have met and it was really cool to finally run into her at a game.
Back in the Pavilion. Here was the view to the right of my seat. Thank you Dan!

A little Rockie history for you.
Here are a few of the Rockies warming-up
Chris Iannetta signs before every game. Rumor has it he does it because he’s superstitious. Superstitious or not he’s a good guy and I believe he’d sign anyway.
He signs for about 5 minutes then goes over to stretch and work out.
Spilly and Hawpe
Jeff Baker and Brad Hawpe
Krista made me put in this picture. She said it summed up the Dodgers lack of excitement in this game. I just don’t get it??
Captain Earthman, business as usual entertaining the masses
Tulowitzki
I call this picture…”Brat with a view”
I really like our new pitcher Marquis, the guy has been a superstar for us.
This game was just what I and all Rockies fans needed.
An in your face, blue bashing, get out of town, you got lucky on the last one, Rockies win.
I especially love beating the Dodgers.
Days like today are special. How often does a person get to go underneath Coors Field, then stand on the field and get autographs? I’m glad I could share some of it with you.
I’ll be at Coors tomorrow for batting practice (weather permitting).
Who knows what whill happen? Stay tuned…D
Showing up for the game = 1 point
4 autographed baseballs = 8 points
Eating a foot long brat = 1 point.
Video of me and an Usher (Missy) = 1 point
Grand Total = 11 points.
Fans galore, now I miss it more.
As bad as I want the baseball season to start, attending the Rockies Pavilion Party last night made it worse. But in a good way.
Maybe it was seeing all those familiar faces. I don’t know many names in this group, but I’ve seen most of them at the games.
They made us feel welcome and I appreciate that.
I was told 7pm which made me exactly a half hour late…I guess in hippy time that’s perfect..kidding.
I have a thing about being late,…I’m not. It’s an Army thing.
I was just glad my family was invited to be part of this gathering. See, I’m not a season ticket
holder because I can’t make every game. Afternoon games are tough for me during the week.
If I know that there isn’t going to be a batting practice, sometimes I’ll skip that game. If you can’t make them all, you tend to be rather selective.
We usually just buy Rockpile tickets and at somepoint during the game we “upgrade” our seats. It’s cool because you can get several different camera angles.
![]()
I did get to see a bunch of familiar faces.
I got to see Captain Earthman off duty.
I found out ”Earth” is heading down to Tucson the same time as the MBU.
When he found out we’re going to have the MBU parked at Hi Corbett for the first eight days of spring training, he got pretty excited. I have a feeling we’ll be having a few brews with Earth while we’re down in Tucson.
Remind me when we’re down there Earth, I’ll pour you a beer for a change brotha!
Captain Earthman, Super Vendor, Super Grandpa.
Earth heads south every February and works the Rockies spring training games. Too bad he already bought his plane ticket, he could have rode down with us.
Dan was there with his wife Julie and kids.
Dan’s a good dude and he introduced me to some people that I recognized, but hadn’t formally met.
He also gave the Rockpile Rant a few plugs. You can’t see it, but Dan’s nametag says ”Emily’s Dad”.
Thanks brotha..Have a good trip.
Here’s a video of Emily and the whole group singing ”Take me out to the Ballgame”.
Below is a shot of Tom and Earth.
Last April, Dan gave Hunter and I tickets for seats in first row of the Pavilion. The seats were right next to Tom. He was fun to watch the game with, and was really cool to Hunter and I. Nice guy and familiar sight at Coors Field.

Here’s Hunter dreaming about baseball.
Here’s Mylee not dreaming about baseball.
Here’s another one of the kids.
Here’s the back of Robert’s Harmon’s jersey with a personalized autograph from Ryan Spilborghs.
In case you hadn’t heard, Ryan Spilborghs got married a few weeks back.
Now you know what I know.
I didn’t get a good shot of Robert, (bald head next to computer in window), but he’s eating dinner with Ryan Spilborghs dad (plaid shirt).

I had the green chile burger and believe me I’m feeling it.
It seemed like a good time was had by all. I’m the newbie to this group, so I plan to put forth some effort next season to get to know this crew better.
This really is a great bunch of Rockies fans.
Hanging around these fans last night gave me a great idea.
For each game that I attend, I’d like to do a season ticket holder fan profile. It would be a picture of them, seat location, their favorite Rockies player, favorite all- time player, how long they’ve been a season ticket holder, etc.
You know, give them some props for being loyal and supporting the Rockies.
I think that would be cool, and you heard it here first.
Cool Note: About six months ago I sent out six 3×5 cards in the mail to various Colorado Rockies Players. I received one back from Omar Quintinilla within five days of mailing them. That was it, until today. As I rifled through my mail, I was staring at the envelope I had addressed to Matt Herges six months ago sitting in my hand.
I opened it up and this is what I found.
Thank you Matt.
How cool is it that I receive this the day of the Rockies Pavilion Party,…D
You can’t go wrong with Cheech and Chong
12/11/08
I was tempted to us the word bong in my rhyming title, but decided against it.
Damn head cold, I could feel it coming. It’s like having your head in a vice.
I don’t get sick very often, I probably got this crap on my trip to Chicago.
Strange new germs out there (and I drank the water).
My wife and I usually do something cool together for our X-mas presents to each other.![]()
This years present is so cool, I’m afraid with my head cold and the news of this, I could spontaneously combust. It’s just too much.
C’mon you know you do.
Before they did all of those funny movies, they were a stand-up comedy team touring the US and Canada.
These two dudes pumped out a bunch of comedy records. Back in the day, everybody who was anybody had at least one.
Below is my personal Cheech and Chong collection. There may be a few more records out there, but not many.
The Cheech and Chong heads have removable skulls. For storage I guess?
Notice the Big Bambu still has the original rolling paper.
Hey we all age, so now they look like this, and have been touring the country with their stand-up comedy act. Tommy Chong’s wife Shelby is the opening act.
![]()
![]()
I was hoping that they would make a “Hitstop”
in Denver.
No special tickets or anything, I was just happy they added the third show.
It’s Sunday night Dec 21..An early X-mas present.
Their records are imbedded in my brain, as they were extremely popular when I was a teen in Canada.
There you have it, another thing knocked off of my ”List of things to do before I croak”.
![]()
Led Zepplin, what’s up fellas? Not a “Whole lotta love”.
If The Who can do it, so can you.
I’ll probably do a special blog after the Cheech and Chong show dedicated to them.
Seeing this show is all I want for X-mas.
I don’t want to outright spoil what I got for my kids (they don’t read this blog in the offseason), but just in case, it rhymes with sockhand.
I think it will be a cool gift to play with the whole family. I’m already a Rockstar, have you seen my music video?? Check it out.
Please don’t slam us. There’s a reason why this short little video clip is the only one us in existance. But hey, I’ve got a music video…Do you?
I’m starting to feel the spirit. Just need to kick this head cold. I cant see Cheech and Chong with a foggy head now can I?…
Oh yea, my special announcement. Robert Harmon, If you read this or Zack’s Hamples blog (listed on my side bar), you know of him.
(This Picture is from Zack Hamples blog).
Long time Coors field snagger, Barry Bonds fake ball, good dude.
Well Robert has decided to join forces with the Ranter, and he along with my buddies Jack (cheeser), and Andy (snagged two balls at a Rockies BP earlier this season) will be the crew for the Mobile Blogging Unit.
What a freggin visual. It’s all about baseball baby.
Robert knows his way around the Tucson area well, it will be fun and an asset “?”
, to have him along. Thanks brotha.
Robert normally heads down to Tucson in his VW bus. But the bus is presently out of commission.
She’s having some transaxle issues. If anyone knows where he can get an early 70′s transaxle at a good price. Send me a note.
Robert sure would appreciate it.
A few blog entries back I had put the question out there, “What makes you happy”.
Kylie of Out of the “Field” Box fame, (located on my sidebar), sent in a few words and a picture of what makes her happy.
Here’s what she wrote:
Hey, man! It’s Kylie. Here’s what makes me happy.
My first snow since 2004. It has been snowing for about two hours now and it’s dying down, but I snagged a picture of it on my shirt to remember it. Plus there’s a real live snowball in my freezer made from snow collecting on our table. It all melted when it hit the ground but it was still supercool…Kylie
Thanks for sharing, the best part of what makes her happy is, snow is free. You can see the tiny little flakes on her red shirt, very cool. Enjoy your winter wonderland
just kidding. Thanks for the picture Kylie.
Everyone, thanks for your click, you made a choice and I’m glad you ended up here…D
