Next Time Put Up a Sign

3-20-12

Today I was itch’n for some batting practice.

Unfortunately the design of Peoria Sports Complex (in my experience) isn’t exactly a Ballhawk’s dream.

I know nothing of the ins and outs of the Peoria Sports Complex. All I can do is tell you about what happened on “this” particular day. It started out great, Mike and I showed up early and the Rockies were out on the field taking batting practice. For about 10 minutes it was only Mike and I watching and I kept thinking “How cool is this, it’s just us”.  Seconds after that thought,  Mike and I were approached by Security and were told that this was a “private” batting practice and we were in a restricted area.

I knew it was too good to be true. What sucks is it wasn’t posted anywhere that we couldn’t be there, no signs.

What Security didn’t know is Mike and I each had snagged a ball before they showed up.

After a quick departure I kept exploring and stumbled across a row of what seemed to be deserted batting cages. They looked like they were accessible to the public as there were no signs stating otherwise. I spotted a few “easter eggs” on the ground so my happy ass wandered in there.

As I was bending over to pick up the “easter egg” I over heard some guy carrying a leaf blower say “Hey, are you supposed to be back here”.

I replied “Am I not supposed to be back here?”

Leaf blower dude says “You can’t just walk back here and pick up baseballs.”

At this point I’m embarrassed and getting irked so I said “You can wander all of the spring train facilities and pick up loose baseballs, that’s exactly what I’m doing until you just  informed me I wasn’t supposed to be here.”

Leafblower dude agreed, backed off me and I continued to wander,  just not by the batting cages. Had I not stopped and tried to pick up the baseball,  Leaf blower dude probably would have ignored me and kept blowing…My eager bad.

Peoria…If you don’t want me in there exploring…PUT UP A SIGN.

We continued our search for batting practice and all we found were locked gates.

Look at this spot. If the gate were unlocked you could snag baseballs from both fields.

Nope big lock on there. Same with the next one. What a beautiful spot, wasted.

At this point it’s over an hour before game time and we’re forced to stand and hope for foul balls.

Sorry Peoria but that’s lame. We knew for a fact there would be no batting practice inside so the one ball I managed to snag from the Rockies “private” batting practice would be the only one of the day. I hate that :(

On a very cool note, we ran into Huston Street and he autographed a ball and posed for a picture.

Time to head into the Stadium.

Here’s Mike the Rox Addict proving he’s a rebel.

Still bummed at the lack of batting practice Mike and I decided to take our chances at the pitching cages.

I call this set “Been caught stealing”

Still determined to take another baseball home from this place I gave this bad boy a shot.

It wouldn’t budge and I couldn’t find a crow bar.

Eventually I wandered over to the Rockies dugout. The first player out to warm-up was “The Duece”

Duece warmed up for a few minutes then exited without signing for anyone. That didn’t faze me, what fazed me was a few minutes later Duece came out and signed for everyone in the front row including me, on the sweet spot.

Thanks Tulo!

Here’s a few pictures of the Rockies pregame.

Here’s Pacheco and EY Jr flashing the Ranter sign.

Again this game I didn’t take any action shots in hopes of catching a game home run. In hindsight, I should have taken the pictures.

Check out the Rox Addict’s blog if you’d like to see some of the action shots.

Rockies lose to the Padres 10-6.

So the day was a bust. Well not totally, look what I managed to snag. I looked but I didn’t see a sign saying I couldn’t take it.

We left it parked at the In n Out Burger.

 Damn good burger.

I’m “D” The Ranter and maybe it’s just me but Peoria seemed kinda stingy with their baseballs.

9/24/09                                     Padres vs Rockies Game 3

IMG_4032.JPGI guess I’m not much of a Ballhawk. My stats this year are pathetic. I’m averaging less than a ball a game and that’s barely noteworthy.

I don’t think I’m slipping. I still catch ‘em as good as I ever have. Actually I’m much better this year at maneuvering the pavilion bleachers and I’ve managed to keep myself injury free.

Everybody has an excuse so here’s what I’m going to attribute this lackluster snaggin season to:

The Rain…. If I attend a game and there’s no batting practice or batting practice is cancelled due to weather that still counts as a game attended and no baseballs caught,…yep it’s sad but true.

I’ve lost count of the number of BP’s that have been cancelled or cut seriously short due to rain or lightning.

Here’s another disturbing trend….Lately the Rockies have been cutting their BP short. Coors Field opens two hours early but by the time fans get inside the Rockies have already been out practicing for a while.

Normally fans who show up early get a half hour with the Rockies on the field.

This picture is of the Rockies leaving the field early. For the last several games the Rockies have been ending their BP shortly after I get myself situated.

I hope the Rockies don’t think I show up two hours early to watch the opposing team hit? IMG_3933.JPGCheck this out, finally I get a rain free afternoon and for the most part batting practice is deserted (remember it’s the Padres). My team leaves BP early (for the umpteenth time) and lets the uninspiring Padres take over the field.

No offense to Padre fans but in my opinion there is not a stingier group of MLB players in all of baseball. It wouldn’t matter so much if they were littering the pavilion with home run balls, but for a team who has had the Rockies number of late these group of guys couldn’t seem to hit a ball anywhere close to the fence.

Whatever Padres, be that way. Credit where credit is due…I will congratulate the Padres for their recent hot streak. Too bad it doesn’t mean anything now. We’re done with you, see you next year.

(I hate losing to the Padres at Coors).

A ballhawk’s worst nightmare… A whole section to myself and not one single ball hit there.

Normally I don’t take pictures during BP, but this one was a bust so here’s a few.
IMG_3919.JPG                                  For some reason Jorge De La Rosa was all smiles.

IMG_3920.JPG
See what I mean. I don’t think I have any other pictures of Jorge smiling.
IMG_3921.JPG
Still smiling, must have been a good joke.
IMG_3922.JPG

Or maybe Jorge was laughing at Ubaldo’s sunglasses.

IMG_3923.JPG If you played professional baseball you could afford the cooler things in life like these special sunglasses. They actually snap into your ears and are guaranteed to never to fall off    :)

After BP or the lack thereof, I walked over to the Rockies side to take a few more pictures and maybe snag Garrett Atkins or Brad Hawpe’s autograph.

Today I saw Chris Iannetta run past the fans and not sign. He (so I thought) has a pre-game ritual and always signs for a few minutes before he heads off to warm-up. Sup with that Chris, why are you breaking routine?

First to walk over and start signing was pitching coach Bob Apodaca…Very nice guy, signs his whole name and takes his time while doing it.
IMG_3952.JPG   Next up is one of the coolest and easiest to talk to Rockies players….Clint Barmes.
IMG_4011.JPG
IMG_4009.JPG A group Coors field employees were being recognized for something. Erik Young Jr was given the assignment of congratulaing each one of them.

Check out this lady…Either EY Jr tickled her palm or he told her the same joke Jorge was laughing at earlier.IMG_3975.JPG

I respect both of these guys too much to bust on them so come up with your own caption for this picture. You can post it in the comment section if you’d like.         IMG_4013.JPG                                                              I’ll let Atkins slide too.

This game sucked. Padres win this one 5-4 and take the series 2-1.

It pains me to watch this team drop the ball like this so late in the season when everything is on the line.

Look out for the Braves, they’re creeping up on us and have a lot of home games left. At this point we don’t have to panic but lets not continue lose games to teams that we should be spanking.

Rockies it’s time to kick it into high gear.

I know your tired, at times it’s quite visible. The last couple weeks of the season is what separates the men from the boys and I don’t go to Coors field to watch boys play baseball.

Step it up fellas, I’m starting to see a smugness in some of the Rockies players and I don’t like that. Remember, the only reason you get to play this sport for a living is because we the fans pay to see you.

Note to the higher salaried Rockies players….Lose the fu*king attitudes. I know the difference between confident and smug and unless you’re Todd Helton you haven’t been playing long enough to have one.

Stop this recent half-steppin, respect your fans and give them some love back, focus, play hard and win some games and we might not look like chumps in the post-season this time.

Go Rockies, I still believe and I’m here to keep your azzes grounded…DGreen Floppy Hat.JPG

I’d like to say thank you to Jim from Utah who offered me his code to buy tickets for the NLDS series. Unfortunately, you had to purchase for all three games at once and the only seats left were the expensive ones. This Ranter doesn’t make that kind of money…But that was a mighty kind thing to do.

Rockies win the set, but yet I still fret.

5/31/09                                  Padres vs Rockies Game 3

Below is Nederland, CO. Proof that hippies and yuppies can live in harmony.

Nederland 5-31-09.jpgSorry this entry has taken a while to get to print. The combination of too much stuff to do and sloooow internet has taken it’s toll on my baseball creativity.

Once the move is finished and we’re settled and the other house is painted and ready to rent, I’ll be back to full speed.

                                                          Then look out :)

There was no batting practice today but it was Rockies Autograph Sunday. Too bad it was the weather was perfect.

Hunter and I decided to wait in line for Randy Flores as neither of us has his autograph.
Flores signing for HUnter 5-31-09.jpg Randy was very cool and signed using my pen and on the sweet spot. After Randy signed for us we glanced over at the other three lines and realized there wasn’t enough time to get another autograph as they were way too long.

I scoped the area and saw Jim Wright talking and signing over to my right so we headed over there. Jim was great and signed for us both.

Jim Wright 5-31-09.jpg                                    Here are the two baseballs I got autographed.

Today we sat behind home plate. Normally I don’t care for these seats but other than the annoying netting I was able to take some sweet pictures.

But first here’s “Brat with a View”

Here’s Jorge and Tulo. Tulo was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

She agreed to do it then backed out. Next time I’ll get it in writing. I slipped a Ranter card into her bag :)

Brad Hawpe went 2 of 4 with a hit and a run scored. Hawpe is having a great season.

Yorvit Torrealba went 2 of 4 with an RBI and two strikeouts.

I had to get a shot of Tony Gwynn, you know…with him being partly responsible for our win the day before.

I’m not sure why we dropped the ball this game. Rockies lose game three to the Padres 5-2.

I’m going to blame it on Mrs. Colorado. She must have distracted the fellas with the crown and the pretty smile and all.
