Whole Lotta Luv for the Talking Glove

4-13-12

talking glove

Back in 2011 I was sitting in the pavilion with my friend Marianne and my boy Hunter watching a Rockies/Dodgers game. A few feet behind us was a drunk Rockies fan who was endlessly heckling Tony Gywnn Jr.

I shot some video and posted it because I was impressed with the way Tony handled himself plus I was laughing so hard I was almost crying. By the end of this game we had all had enough of the heckler (who sounded like Gilbert Godfried), screaming in our ears.

Here’s a link to the blog entry I wrote about it…Tony Takes the Abuse…Then Lets Loose.

Yesterday my YouTube account came to life with non-stop emails and comments on this video. This video has received over 314,000 hits so far.

Someone posted my video on Reddit

Go figure? Anyways, here’s the video:

Click HERE to read write-up of the game almost two years ago.

The article mentions how Tony made the game ending catch off of Charlie Blackmon. I remember that catch, it was impressive. What was even more impressive is after he caught the ball he turned around, smiled, tipped his cap to the heckler and strutted off the field. The write-up even mentions the heckler..Very cool!

It seems almost every sports blog and funny video website in the country has picked up this video. I saw the video on the MLB fan cave and in Yahoo Canada EH!

What kind of sucks is not one of them mentions the guy who filmed it or my blog the Rockpile Rant.

Rockies vs White Sox..Camelback Ranch

Last day in Arizona.

camelback ranch board

This was my first time visiting the Ranch(home to the Dodgers and White Sox). As far as spring training facilities go this one is a real gem. It’s beautifully laid out with little ponds and walkways everywhere.

We were there on a Monday and the back fields were almost deserted.

I wandered around, enjoying the early morning sun, reflecting on the past few days and thinking about life in general. How many spring training facilities can you get enough peace and quiet to actually relax and ponder shit?

While I was “Zone’n” I noticed some players gathering in the outfield of one of the practice fields. I watched as one of the coaches started hitting pop-flys right up against the outfield wall and players were jumping trying to catch them and keep ‘em from going over the fence. I hurried over to where the balls were going over the fence and I noticed it  was just me there. For a few short minutes it was yours truely catching the baseballs that the minor league players couldn’t snag. Eventually folks saw me having the time of my life and decided to join.

All in all probably 25 baseballs were hit out.

As soon as that drill was finished the minor leaguers started their batting practice. Sitt’n with seven baseballs already I was having a great day.  BP was a bit more crowded but I manged to catch one on the bounce and one on the fly preventing a bystander from getting hit in the face with a home run ball.

Dude didn’t even say thank you….Dick

Folks, this place is special even if it is enemy territory.

Today wound up being not only a good day for baseballs but it was a great day for autographs.

I managed to get Todd Helton to sign my baseball, Eric Young Jr to sign a picture, and Skipper Walt Weiss signed my 1993 photo ball of him.

The Rockies lose this one to the White Sox. Matter of fact, the Rockies lost every game we saw them play the week we were in Arizona except for when they played the USA WBC team.

I have no idea what we’re in for this season as far as the Rockies go.

I’m “D” the Ranter…I’d like to thank the Rox Addict for splitt’n the costs and being good company.

It was fun, but this year’s trip is done. 20 days till the first home game at Coors Field!

Dodgers vs Rockies Game 1

Yes I said that I was taking a break.

Funny how as soon as I said that the Rockies step up and start playing.

Today during batting practice I was witness to one of the scariest things that can happen during BP.  Dodgers were up and I was backing up positioning myself for what I though would be a sweet catch. At the last-minute I realized that this ball was going to land at least six feet behind me and I had no shot at it. I turned around to see where the ball was going to land and I heard a young boy scream.

That BP homer landed smack on top of a little boys head.

I got that sick feeling in my stomach whenever I see a child tagged at BP. Shortly after the little boy got hit, Jamey Wright former Rockie now a Dodger, climbed the outfield wall to check on him.

Then he gave the little boy his glove.

I couldn’t take pictures because I was still in shock from seeing the little guy take one to the head. What Jamey did was turn this childs horrific memory into a positive one. Now when he thinks of Coors Field and the time he got hit in the head with a baseball he’ll have a good memory instead of a painful one.

Classy as classy can be Jamey…Wow!!

UPDATE !!

I received a comment from Mike father of the little boy(Ryan) who was hit with the ball.

Thank you for your blog Ranter. That little boy is my son, Ryan. He went there with a friend of his and well, you know the rest of the story. My wife and I met him at the hospital after and were wondering who gave him the glove and thanks to your blog we now know.

Mike thanks for letting us know…”D”

I’ve only seen a player give a kid a glove one time before. It was back in 2009. Manny Corpas was leaving the field after BP was finished. He turned to toss the last ball up. He tossed the ball to my son Hunter. Hunter misjudged the toss and it hit him in the chest. It knocked the wind out of him but he was fine.

The next day Manny was signing autographs during Autograph Sunday. Hunter was in Manny’s line and when he reached Manny told him that he was the one hit by the ball the day. Hunter just wanted to let Manny know he was ok.

Manny told Hunter to meet him over by the dugout when he was finished signing..

Below is what happened.

I didn’t get a picture this time but “Dante” the squirrel made another appearance.

I’ve got to give props to Dan’s daughter Emily who snagged her first live home run ball in the 8th inning. She snagged Chris Nelson’s first home run of the season.

That’s just too cool…Now Coors Field has another ballhawk with a better home run record than me :)

Rockies take Game 1 over the Dodgers 13-3.

It’s been a great week for Rockies baseball…Rockies, I like what I’m seeing. I guess I never realized how much luv is out there for the Rockpile Rant…Thank you everyone for your support!

Game Two

I was pretty excited about the game today(surprise).

:)

The Rockies had won game one the night before and the Rox Addict had informed me it was raining baseballs during batting practice in the pavilion on Monday. With my record so far I was ready for a downpour.

I was the first in the pavilion and worked my way down to the first row. The Rockies stayed out for most of the half hour we’re allowed to watch them hit. I had play on one ball before the Rockies called it quits. I didn’t bobble it, it just fell about six inches short of my glove as I was leaning over the wall.

I was hang’n with the Rox Addict and my buddy Scott today. After the Dodgers took the field Scott pointed out that Don Mattingly was walking around the field catching pop flys. At one point Don scooped down to pick up a ball that fell short and turned to toss it to the crowd. I called his name and was sure he was going to toss it to me. Instead he tossed it over my head and my buddy Scott snagged it…That’s pretty damn cool in my book and that’s why I show up early. You never know when you’ll make a lifetime memory.

I had play on a few more baseballs but again I pulled a goose egg. It’s starting to stress me a little because my vision isn’t quite what it used to be and I’m hoping that’s not what’s causing me to keep coming up a bit short. Gett’n old sucks, no doubt about it.

I took some pre-game pictures today.

The Hosers

My good buddy and former Rockie Mark Ellis. This guy is a helluva player, not sure why we let him go?

Tony is always dangerous.

Before I could choke down my dollar hot dog the Rockies were down 7-0 and Chacin was a memory.

 In comes Roenicke.

That bat is history but on the plus side no stitches required.

Rockies played hard and got within one run.

Final Score…Dodgers 7 Rockies 6

I like Chacin but the dude is 0-3 this season with 7.03 ERA in 5 starts. This game was his worst with a career-high seven earned runs on 11 hits and four walks.

I’m “D” The Ranter and I’m wondering if the next time I see Chacin start it’ll be in Colorado Springs??

Next game…Saturday vs the Braves…Go Rockies!!

Hunter and I were the first in Line at Gate E. We let our out-of-town guest Zack Hample go in front of us because that’s the right thing to do. We figured we’d beat him to the pavilion anyway because of his ankle boot but he made it there first.

I snagged two balls on the fly today and was first to touch a toss-up that I handed to the intended recipient. Hunter managed to snag one toss-up.

Zack snagged his 400th ball of the season within just a few minutes.

Here’s a few game shots.

Crazy Scoreboard.

Nettie, Zack and Danny.

Remember folks, when at a baseball game “Just Say No” to the Wave.

Marianne, Hunter and I watched from the front row of the pavilion and listened to two drunk Rockies fans heckle Tony Gwynn for most of the game. Tony didn’t respond at all until the 9th inning. Here’s video of Tony finally acknowledging the hecklers.

Shortly after Tony made a stellar flying leap to catch a bases loaded hit from Charlie Blackmon to the left field to end the game. Tony stood up, looked at the hecklers, smiled an “In your face” smile and headed off the field…Classy.

Below is a link to video of Tony’s catch:

DODGERS VS ROCKIES GAME 2

Weather: 75 degrees, partly cloudy.
Wind: 9 mph, Out to CF.
T: 2:51.
Att: 32,116.

When you wake up and you’re still amped from the previous night’s game I consider that a call to action.

Lots of things going on today. Rockies are up in this four game series by one game, I’m hang’n with the kids, and Zack Hample(The Professor of Snag) is in town for the four game Dodgers series.

The kids and I were third to get in line at the gate and as we were waiting in the hot sun I noticed Zack hobbling up to our gate sport’n crutches and a huge ankle boot. Immediately I felt sorry for him as I myself had spent a good 10 days getting to know the boot and I’m still wearing an ankle brace.

We chatted a bit, and I offered him a place in line but Zack had pre-arranged to have someone hold him a spot. Smart, I had no idea? Anyways I’ll spare you the story of the Coors Field regular who cut in front of us then tried to play like he didn’t. After a brief exchange of words it’s my guess is he wont ever cut in front of the kids and I again :). I’ll spare you a picture of him as he’s an ugly SOB.

Zack signed a few books before we entered the gates and he and I arranged to meet up after BP so he could sign my book too. Here’s my copy of Zack’s new book. Fantastic read, with two Coors Field Rantics actually in-between the covers.

Dan and Robert

Here’s Zack’s inscription along with his current ball count at the time of the inscription.

Batting practice today was a good time for the kids and I. Each of  them snagged two baseballs which is a good thing because then there’s no argument over who has more :)..Photo by LUVMYROX.

Me, I really only had play on one ball. It was hit directly to me and I realized it was going to land slightly short of the outfield wall. I leaned over and down as far as I could and as the ball landed perfectly in my glove, until…. Ramon Troncoso slapped his glove down and knocked it out of my hand.

In past experiences most players at this point will pick up the ball and toss it back to the bucket cause there’s no luv for the guy who loses a ball  right?

Not this time, guess he felt sorry for me and he tossed it up to me, that kind gesture from a Dodger made my day.

 Ramon Troncoso,  nice guy.

Here’s my picture show from this game starting with the first pitch of the game.

All pictures were taken from the Rockpile. This one of the kids and I and my buddy Scott was taken by LUVMYROX.

4-5-11                               Dodgers vs Rockies Game 1D vs R 4-5-11.jpg

Weather: 71 degrees, clear.
Wind: 14 mph, L to R.
T: 2:19.
Att: 24,693

The game today was my third this season and the Rockies first against the Dodgers. I arrived at Coors Field and guess who was there ahead of me?

the Rantics 4-5-11.jpg

Leave it to the some of the Rantics to be the first ones at the gates. That’s what I’m talking about. Left to Right.. Mike the Rox Addict, Alannah X and Gary X.

Mike may be the Rox Addict, but he was a Rantic first :)

I was looking forward to this game as I knew it wouldn’t be nearly as crowded as it has been the last few games. As soon as they opened the gates Mike and I headed for the Pavilion. I was gravitating over to my usual spot and noticed a baseball sitting under a bleacher.

This Coors Field rarity is know as an Easter Egg and believe it or not it’s my first at Coors Field. The Coors Field Ushers unfortunately do a great job of picking up ALL the baseballs before we get inside and somehow they missed this one.

My first ball of the year…An Easter Egg…I’m ok with that. Something new right?

Rockies were on the field and batting practice was in full swing. Ball two was tossed up to me by Ubaldo Jimenez as the Rockies were leaving the field. I gave it to a little girl who was with her mom leaning on the railing.

Dodgers took the field and not long after I was tracking my third ball. In the chase for the ball I found myself in the tunnel and realized I didn’t have a chance at the ball as it was going to land inside the pavilion not inside the tunnel.

I’ve learned not to give up at that point as any number of things can happen, and did.

The guy who attempted to catch this homer let it bounce out of his glove and it dropped down into the tunnel right in front of me and I snapped it up. Game three of the season and still no balls caught on the fly :(

I gave that ball away to a little boy standing close by with his family.

That would be it for batting practice.

As we walked by ROOT SPORTS I took this shot of R-LUV with Tom Helmer in the background.RLUV 4-5-11.jpg

R-Luv got to sit in the pavilon today so she gave me her ticket which wound up being in the first row of right field, prime home run territory. No luck, however during the very next game Todd Helton hit a homerun to that exact location.

A few entries back I mentioned that I wanted to interview a Rockies fan every other game or so. Well I had someone step up to the plate and volunteer, I like that.

Her name is Katerina and I first met her a few months ago while standing in line outside of Coors Field waiting to purchase Rockies tickets with Hunter and Mylee. She mentioned she had read the Rockpile Rant and really liked the blog Purple Row.

We talked about the Rockies while we waited in line.

Very cool lady, HUGE Rockies fan and my first fan interview of 2011.
Katerina Coors Field.jpg

 1.   How did you become a Rockies fan?

Becoming a Rockies fan was a choice I made four years ago this month. Wow, four years! But how and why: I just decided I wanted to follow baseball and learn more about it. The choice for the team I would root for was obvious, because the Rockies were the home team, and not to mention their colors were purple. I’m the only Rockies fan in my family, so I guess that makes me the purple and black sheep, but at least they raised me to root for the home team, and none other.

I hate to be classified with the ’07 bandwagon fans, but truth is: it was during that run when I first realized I loved them, and during that first offseason when I realized I had an addiction. It gets worse and worse, or rather better and better each year. It’s been a great ride, and I feel honored to be living during such a great time to be a Rockies fan.

  1. Who is your favorite Rockies player (current or past) and why?

My favorite player is Troy Tulowitzki. He always was, since his rookie year, and it’s awesome to say that he always will be, because of his contract extension.

I chose Tulo because he is a great player, defensively and offensively. Also, two had been my favorite number, and the fact that he was a rookie that seemed to be staying for a while certainly helped that choice. But the greatest reason I chose him was the fact that he wants to play the game the right way, and wants to be the best at it. I can relate to his competitiveness and passion. And Tulo wants to win. When he showed loyalty by signing to stay with Colorado forever he was cemented even more as my favorite player.

Yeah, his song and hair might be ugly sometimes, or most of the time, but it’s awesome to be stuck with Tulo as a favorite player.

  1. Favorite Rockies moment or memory.

Wow, only one? That’s hard.

I have to go with having mine and my family’s ears glued to the radio during Rocktober. That streak was just so awesome, and listening together, staying up way past our bedtimes is a classic memory I’ll never forget.

I’ve had a lot of good memories next to the radio these past few years.

Near seconds are attending a Rox game at AT&T Park last August, appearing on and being interviewed for Rockies All Access Tulo show last spring, and being at 2009 Game Four in the bottom of the 8th before Huston Street broke our hearts.

I feel the best is yet to come…very soon.

  1. If you could have any job with the Rockies organization what would you like to do?

If I would choose any job in the organization, I’d work on the Rockies Magazine staff. Even proofreading every issue would be cool.

Either that or be the person who secretly switches out the humidor-ized baseballs for ones that haven’t been in the humidor, and sneaks the “juiced balls” into the Giants ball bag when they come to Coors Field.

Alright, that last one is a joke.

Thank again Katerina, great job.  I’ll change-up the questions each time.

I had a few more pictures but MLBlogs started acting up again so we’ll call this one done.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to a game or at least if feels that way. I had tickets but had to miss Tuesday and Wednesday’s games due to an injury. I really hate that.

I discovered something called sciatica. Not fun stuff especially if you enjoy having feeling in your legs.

Because of this, I’ll have to change my snagg’n game plan, at least until I’m back to 100%.  Instead of being able to run and chase baseballs, I’ll have to use my superior tracking skills to be a little more choosy on the batting practice snags I attempt.

Such is life I guess…Gett’n old sucks.

Today I got lucky and snagged the first one of BP within a minute of entering the pavilion. It was a fairly easy catch, the only hiccup was manuevering between the seats to get to the rail in time.

I gave that ball to a young Rockies fan who was nearby. I can always use karma points :).

Shortly after my handoff, Rant Regular Ken snagged a Tulowitzki BP homer.

Here’s video of it shot by Dan

I believe Ken’s total for the day was two, nice job.

I want to personally thank everyone who helped me this week and thank those of you who sent well wishes. This kind of thing is a parent’s worst nightmare and I appreciate all the support.

I love this community and the help I’ve received has been extremely touching. I’m not thrilled with where she’s calling home but at least I have closure.  Krista, Hunter, Mylee and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts…D The Rockpile Ranter

8/25/09                                 Dodgers vs Rockies Game 1

For those of you who were worried about the rain and stayed home missing this epic Rockies game let me just say you Fu*ked up.
IMG_2420.JPG Last night Coors field was buzzing like a giant size orgasmatron which in the end left the Dodgers feeling wet and unfulfilled :)

I was first through the Rockpile gate today.
IMG_2422.JPG As much as I like Zack Hample there was no way he was getting inside my Pavilion before I was. That actually paid off for me. As I decended the pavilion stairs Aaron Cook was picking a baseball up from the outfield fence and I said “Hey Aaron” and held up my glove. I normally don’t ask but I was the first one there and it was just me and Aaron.

Aaron looked up and tossed me that ball…Thank you Aaron.  His toss was a bit short and rolled underneath the bleachers all the way to the front of row two. I was the only one in that section so I casually walked down the bleachers to the bottom and picked it up. When I looked up standing in front of me was Zack Hample “The King of Snag” as I’ve labeled him.

Batting practice was all about fun today. I actually had some play on a bunch of homers that I thought were out of my reach. I bobbled one of them, chased several more and came up short.  Twice during BP I missed a toss up form Seth Smith who I swear was trying to toss right to me. Sorry Seth my bad, I do appreciate it.

IMG_2424.JPG At one point I took out my camera and was going to try to shoot some video of Zack snagging a homer but as soon as I “whipped it out”….  I was tracking another baseball in my area.

I let it hit the bleacher in front of me and it bounced back into my row. I wasn’t going to dive for it because I had my camera in my hand. As I reached down to possess it another Rockies fan got all up in my space and snatched it up.

I believe I mentioned something like “Dude if you want it that bad you can have it”. At that point my entire mission for the rest of BP was to deny that pr-ick another baseball.

It worked, the last homer of batting practice was caught by yours truly while that dude watched helplessly.

That baseball said “Dodgertown” on it and I walked over and gave it to Joy’s (aka LUVMYROX) son.

Today I witnessed another unnecessary batting practice injury. A guy was standing up against the rail in row two talking to his buddies. He had no idea it was heading right for him and it clocked him above the temple.

All I can say is it’s a good thing he didn’t see it or he would have tensed up and probably got killed.

                                                                  Scary stuff people.

Guess who came up from AAA Sky Sox today?
IMG_2471.JPGEric Young Jr. got his first hit today, here’s a picture of it. He made it to first safely and later tried to steal second.
IMG_2543.JPG     Here is the picture I got of EY Jr’s first steal attempt. As you can tell he didn’t make it.

He seemed frustrated. Maybe the negativity got to him?

I like this series of pictures, I’m glad I got to see it in person. My favorite in the first picture is EY Jr. It’s his first game and “What a finish!”.

Down two I hate blue

4/26/09

Ok, I made it to batting practice on Saturday. I spent half of my day at the yard sale and the other half in the hospital with Hunter. Krista and I got up really early on Saturday and started hauling our stuff outside. About 8 am Hunter wandered downstairs and when I saw him I had to do a double-take. My poor guy looked like somebody clocked him in the jaw hard. It was all swollen and his face was all puffy.

We’re waiting on the tests to come back to be 100% sure, but most likely it’s the mumps. Can you believe this,… the mumps? I guess I thought that stuff was wiped out along with scurvy a long time ago. Not so is the case, mumps has been making a resurgence in the mid-west.

So looks like Hunter will miss nine days of school as per state law.

I don’t have mumps but yesterday at BP felt like I got hit by a train. I had one good opportunity to snag a ball. The ball landed right on my hand inside the glove and bounced out. All I can say is I was pitiful.

After that missed snag, I started feeling really sick and by the end of BP I could hardly stand up. My back, legs and neck were killing me. I headed home and listened to this game on the radio.

Saturdays game was the first Rockies game that I’ve been to in which I actually had my camera and didn’t take a picture.

I feel bad too because a friend that I work with wanted me to mention the Fatima Choir and take a few pictures of first grader Myles Krick. She is the little girl who threw out the first pitch on Saturday’s game and the Fatima Choir sang the National Anthem.

To my friend at work, I apologize this doesn’t happen often.

                                            Friday Hagg’n points.

Thumbnail image for foot long brat 4-24-09.JPG1 point for showing up.

1 point for buying a foot-long brat.

1 point for snagging a Spilborghs toss-up which I gave away to a young boy.

2 points for snagging a BP homer caught on the fly which was given to Emily from “I live for this”.

Friday Hagg’n total = 5 points

           Saturday Hagg’n points

1 point for showing up.

It’s Sunday morning right now, my lower back still hurts but hell or high water I’ll be there.

I haven’t snagged a single autograph since the regular season started and I just can’t have that.

Krista and Mylee are doing the yard sale today, Hunter is home sick and I’m out to get a few signatures today because it is autograph Sunday. Alex, I’ll see you there.
