Running Full Throttle in a Bottle

Game 16

Chiefs vs Broncos (1/1/2012)

The Ranter family was highly anticipating this game for several reasons. Firstly this game featured  the first ever match-up between Denver’s former Quarterback Kyle Orton and Denver’s new Quarterback Tim Tebow.

The Broncos were just one win away from winning the AFC West and Kyle Orton was on a mission to destroy Denver’s playoff chances, shove a win down Denver fan’s throats,  and put on a solid performance as teams that could need a Quarterback next season will be watching his performance closely.

The other reason we were excited was I had recently won a contest sponsored by Bud Light. I won the chance to wear a Bud Light bottle suit and race two other bottles on the field during halftime at this particular game.

In addition Bud light and the Broncos awarded me two tickets to the game and a parking pass. We decided it would be fun to take Mylee and Hunter so they could see their dad dressed up like a beer bottle at halftime. I was stoked and very much looking forward to being able to stand on the Broncos field for the first time. More on this whole experience further into this blog entry…

Here are the kids pre-game. This was their first official Broncos tailgating experience, they’re quick learners.

The weather was decent for tailgating  and we spent some time chatting with Andy from Spring training and Hunter and I tossed around the football.

Hunter managed to tell off some KC fans in his own special way.

The Mile High skydivers were in full effect. I wish I could show you all of these photos, they’re really cool.

The big flag.

The coin toss. The coin is in the air next to the cameraman’s shoulder.

A couple of shots of Tebow coming out of the Broncos tunnel.

Here are some game pictures I took in no particular order.

About halfway through the second quarter the folks who were doing the Bud Light race arrived at my seat to take me down to field level. When I arrived at the end of the tunnel field level there were six minutes left before halftime. I was allowed to watch the game from that spot until two minutes were left then it was time to  get my bottle suit on. I was given the Bud Light Lime bottle (I had no choice), and about a 30 lb backpack to strap on my back to keep the bottle pumped up.

Then the other bottles and I returned back to the tunnel and waited anxiously for halftime. I’m the white and green bottle.

I had a lot of friends at this game and as competitive as I am I had to win this thing. I had spent several days pondering exactly what I’d do if I won.

In the end I decided I absolutely had to spike the ball and do a “Tebow” while in the bottle suit.

Me standing around enjoying the moment.

Here’s what the race consisted of. We were supposed to run to the 10 yard line drop and do 5 push ups. Then run through the cones and across a ladder. Next I had to catch a football and haul ass back to the start line.

Simple enough right?

Well the announcer Roach said “On you mark, get set” then he pause a few extra seconds and in that time I stepped forward then to be fair I stepped back. As I was stepping back Roach said “Go”.

I was behind from the very start.

I stopped exactly on the 10 yard line to do my push ups but the other bottles kept going.

As I started to push up I stopped to look up and see why the other bottles kept going.

Then I saw them finally drop and I knocked out my push ups.

I managed to gain some ground in the cones even though Bud Light Wheat (the orange bottle), skipped two of them.

By the time I hit the ladders I had a small lead.

Then the dude tossed me the football and I dropped it.

At that point I was like “Shit”, and I scrambled to find the football. It only took me a few seconds to find the ball but it’s not easy bending over in a bottle suit.

Once I regained possession of the ball the race was back on but I was dead last again.

I was gaining ground fast.

The fear of losing was taking over my old body and I reached deep inside for that last burst of energy.

I managed to catch Bud Light Wheat and it was a photo finish. In the end I was announced the winner(remember the  Bud Light Wheat bottle skipped two cones).. :)

I was a bit winded but I scored a win  for my kids and my fans.

And if you’re wondering if I pulled of my T-Bud?(Thanks Todd)…You Betcha!

This is the video Krista shot of the whole thing.

Here’s what I won. A Broncos shirt, a Broncos pin, some stickers, a Bud Light hat, a Broncos magazine, a koozie, and the last thing in the bag was an envelope. The envelope contained a piece of paper that said I could choose an Authentic jersey of my choice.

Thank you for this opportunity Bud Light. That my friends is how you start out a New Year.

Chiefs beat the Broncos in the final game of the regular season and I still have no issues with losing Kyle Orton. His performance was Ho-Hum kinda dull, just like him.

If Orton’s plan was to send Denver fans a message,  he didn’t. Props to the Denver Defense for keeping us in this game.

Broncos Coach John Fox has specifically asked Denver Season Ticket holders not to sell their tickets. This is because way back in 2006 (the last time the Broncos made the playoffs), Mile High Stadium was filled with more Steelers fans than Broncos fans and it was straight up embarrassing.

I’m “D” The Ranter and I’m still on the Tebow wagon, but I feel like my ass is dragg’n. The rest of America can go ahead and tell Tebow he can’t win a Superbowl.

Not me, I’ve recently seen life from inside the bottle and I believe…”D”

GO BRONCOS!!!

 Lions vs Broncos

Krista and I were really amped for this game along with the rest of the Bronco Nation as was witnessed by the enthusiasm of the tailgaters gett’n down in the Broncos parking lot pre-game.

I had no idea what to expect from Tebow this game. We all know he managed to pull out that win in Florida with a lot of prayers and some plain old last second luck. My opinion (which was formed during Kyle Orton’s last game) was I’d rather see Tebow lose and get the experience than see Orton’s unmotivating presence on the field.

By the end of this game that’s exactly what we got to see. Chalk this game up to experience as the inexperience of our new quarterback was painfully obvious.

Have I mentioned that I love photographing the skydivers as they enter Mile High?

 These dudes are f’kn nuts.

The horse coming out of the horse.

Tebow doing the stand up version of Tebowing.

The coin toss. If you look close you can see the coin.

Right off the bat the Broncos marched downfield and scored a touchdown that for some reason was not a touchdown in the referee eyes. The play was reviewed and in the end wasn’t changed.

The Broncos settled for a field goal.

Then the game went from bad to worse.

All I could do is watch in disbelief and take pictures.  Here you go.

Champ Baily doing what he does best.

Well amost…Johnson broke the tackle and scored.

This game was painful to watch. Even more painful if you paid to watch it.

Final Score..Lions 45   Broncos 10

I haven’t given up on Tebow. Stuff like this helps a fellow build character. But if you listen closely you can hear the rest of America saying “See Denver, you get what you ask for”.

And they’d be correct.

I’m the Ranter…Baby steps, as painful as they may be.

I’m not going ot tell Tebow “He can’t do it”.

Go Broncos…”D”

Orton Hears A Boo…Or Two

CHARGERS VS BRONCOS

The end of baseball season for me means Nuggets basketball (although this season is a bust), and Broncos Football. If you follow this blog you know it’s not limited to baseball. I’m a Colorado Blogger and with that said I need to be flexible, so I blog about all kinds of events from Judas Priest concerts to my little town of Nederland’s famous “Frozen Dead Guy Days”.

After almost ten years on the Broncos season ticket waiting list our number finally came up and Krista and I were offered the opportunity to purchase season tickets a few months ago. My wife is probably a bit more of a football fan than me(and a lot less of a baseball fan), but I’ve been a solid Broncos fan since 1989.

She supports me hanging out with the Rantics at Coors Field so I didn’t hesitate to get her the Broncos season tickets.

Happy Wife = Happy Life

The plus side is I get to go too :) Hunter and Mylee both were able to attend the two home pre-season games and they had a great time.

Our seats are on the fifth level and only thing in front of us is a railing. Cool thing, not too far from our seats  is the Broncos fan mascot known as the Broncnater.

Here’s the Broncnator in full effect on the Big Screen.

Here he is in person.

Gotta respect a guy who puts his trademark name on his Jersey :)

This particular game was my third Broncos game of the season and although it was the Broncos forth loss I felt this game was blog worthy. The game kicked off the with the announcement that the skydivers were jumping out of the plane.  Everyone stands there and looks up and waits for the skydivers to enter the stadium.

If you’ve never seen live before this it can get a bit tense at times as these dudes swoop over extremely close to the crowd. Once these guys manuver themselves inside the stadium they are haul’n a-ss.

Nobody took a boot to the head so I’d call this one a perfect landing.

Then there was the flyover…That never gets old…Jets will always be cool.

Ok, I was not on the Tebow bandwagon at the beginning of this game. I like Tebow but I figured he needed more time to learn the Broncos system and mature. But I’m not seeing anything I like from Mr. Orton thus far into the season.

Not long into the game the boo’s started because of Orton’s performance and not long after the Tebow chants started to echo the stadium.

I felt bad for Orton but not only did he put on a lackluster performance he just looked like he wasn’t into it. Body language says a lot. Kyle’s body language said..”Bench Me”

Coach Fox succumbed to the crowd pressure, pulled Orton, put in Tebow and the Broncos were back in the game. Something about Tebow, when he is on the field it feels electric. It’s like the Mile High Magic is back.

Say what you want, I was there and I felt it.

Here are some random game pictures.

This dude is gonna be great.

Gets the two point conversion.

Decker Flying

This catch was one Coach Fox reviewed. He clearly had possession.

Upon further review it was a reception.

 Champ Baily doing his thing.

Sends Mathews airborne.

Mathews lands and loses possession of the ball.

Broncos ball.

Rivers attempts a throw to Jackson.

 Jackson thinks he has it.

I think at this point Jackson knows he’s lost it.

The Broncos had a chance to win the game with one second left close to the goal but it wasn’t to be.

Broncos lose to the Chargers. The final score was 29-24. I’ve never exited Mile High with a loss and seen the crowd still buzzing with excitement. Is Orton done and the Tebow era begun?

By the way..Have you heard of Tebowing? You’ll love this :)

I’m the Ranter…I’m on the Tebow wagon, I like a quarterback with heart.

Tribute to The Barrel Man Part 2

12/20/09            Broncos vs Raiders Invesco Field at Mile High

I don’t have the opportunity or money to attend a lot of Broncos football games. Since they built Invesco Field at Mile High and tore down the old Mile High Stadium ticket prices for a Broncos game have become ridiculious.

I picked up these tickets in August for Krista’s birthday present.(Thanks Dan). We never miss the Broncos/Raiders game.

For a good reason too, we’re what you call Raider Haters.raider hater1.jpg FACT: After a Broncos game a Raider fan can usually get from the stadium to his car with out bodily harm.

I’m not so sure you could say the same about a Broncos fan working his way back to his car in Oakland.

Bronco fans take their tailgating seriously. Krista and I had spent the previous night in Colorado Springs at a long time friend of ours X-mas party so our tailgating consisted of a six-pack and a couple of Subway subs.

With that said we had food and booze… what more do you need to successfully tailgate?

IMG_5806.JPG

Ok,… one of these contraptions might be nice but remember folks I was scraping just to afford the damn tickets in the first place…Cool stuff though. The parking lot was filled with Bronco vehicles and maniacs of all kinds.

As we approached the front of Mile High we noticed the first tribute to the Barrel Man.IMG_5810.JPG

Notice it says “The Greatest Superfan Ever…Nice touch Broncos.

There was a moment of silence during the game for Chris Henry who recently passed.IMG_5813.JPG       All the photos I took today were taken from the 500 level so they are not the greatest.

IMG_5814.JPG

Did I mention it was a beautiful day?

It’s not often you can catch a Broncos game in December and not need a heavy jacket.

IMG_5815.JPG
Here’s video of the Broncos running on to the field.

As I had hoped, before the game started there was a video tribute to the Barrel Man. Instead of a moment of silence they called for a Broncos Cheer. Additionally they did the wave starting in the South Stands until the game started.

That was cool. I have no idea what else the Broncos Organizaton may have planned for the memory of the Barrel Man. I did notice during the game when they were trying get the fans pumped up the Barrel Man would pop up on the big screen and give a cheer…I liked that.

The Raiders had our number today. The Broncos defense was non-existant. Kyle Orton was totally off his mark today and it’s not easy to miss Brandon Marshall as he’s a really big dude with long arms.

Here’s a shot of the almost final score.

IMG_5984.JPGSecond year in a row the Raiders have beat the Broncos at home and we paid to see it. The Broncos lost this one in the last minute of the game. Such is football I guess.

This name better be in the Hall of Fame

1/31/09

shannan-action.jpg

 23 Days till MBU.

Shannon Sharpe.

Today’s his big day (hopefully). The guy has arms the size of my legs and and an ego of similar size.

Here’s why I think he should be in the Hall of Fame.

Sharpe was selected All-Pro four times. He’s played in eight Pro Bowls 1992-1998, and has surpassed 1000 yards in three different seasons.

In his 14 year career, Sharpe had 815 receptions for 10,060 yards along with 62 touchdowns in 204 games.

He’s also the proud owner of three Super Bowl rings.

And on top of all that, he’s a stand up guy and a snazzy dresser.

Sharpe SI.jpgHere is one of my favorite quotes from Shannon Sharpe, and this dude has some good ones:

“I won’t talk about someone’s mother. I won’t talk about their girlfriend or their wife, but if you have a deformity, I would talk about that.”When asked about who he would invite to a dinner party Sharpe responded  with “Bill Gates,  Warren Buffet, Michael Jordan
and Halle Berry. I’d talk to Gates, Buffett and Jordan first, and then me and Halle would go get another table in the back that’s candlelit, and I’d let them discuss whatever they want to discuss.”

I loved Sharpe’s attitude.

The guy was always talking smack but like a Dion Sanders he could back it up.

Good Luck Sharpie..You’ve got my vote…D

Baseball TV for you and me :)

12/30/08

You rock.GIFI appreciate all the comments from the LaMar’s donut entry and all ideas for my F’ed up computer. We’ve got quite the creative bunch of  writer/readers/eaters/marksmen/stunt drivers here in the sphere. Unfortunatly none of your ideas could be legally carried out within the city limits :), but I thank you for your input anyway.

mlblogs black1.jpgI’m starting to see a few more Rockies blogs within MLBlogs.com. All I can say is…..

It’s about time. If any of the new “Rockies bloggers” visit here, expose your identity now,…just kidding, welcome. I look forward to reading your blogs.

Wassup111.gif
If you see me at a game, come over and say “hi”, I’m friendly,

I’m just not going to go searching for you if you know what I mean.

It would be inspiring to see more Rockies blogs in the top 100.

Be proud Rockies fans, I’ll keep chugging along, but I’m hurting for some real live, in front of me, damn that ball almost hit me, dude you spilled beer down the back of my shirt, hey, was that a raindrop?, can I see your ticket please?, that’ll be $15 for the hot dog and coke, why is there always a line when I have to pee?, did I just see a freggin balk?, yes you can have a cotton far off1.jpgcandy, look Hunter we’re first in the Pavilion again, kind of baseball. I need the real deal.

Spring training seems far away today, I guess I’m just ready for a vacation. Plus, I have so much stuff to finish up before we roll out the MBU.

Props to the MLB network launching here shortly. How cool is this going to be, 24/7, whatever your schedule baseball at your fingertips. It’s been a long time coming and we’re ready, thank you MLB,..seriously.

                                                  I hope it’s a huge success.

MLB opening day1.jpg It will be cool watching the MLB Network evolve. Just look at, ESPN, MTV, HBO,..I remember when they first started and believe me they were bare bones broadcasting.

Planet-of-the-Apes.jpgLook at what they are now, whether you watch them now or don’t, you can’t deny the fact that they’ve seriously evolved.

I don’t know what’s happening in Colorado. A week back sub-zero temperatures, now this morning I wake up and take a gander out at my back yard and I couldn’t believe it.

I had to rub my eyes because I saw a tornado of trash encircling the entire backyard. I opened the sliding glass door and a massive blast of wind blew a stack of papers off of the dinner table all over the place. It was a freaky warm, early morning hurricane of some sort. The winds had to be at least 100 MPH or more.

Thumbnail image for hot_rod_shopping_cart.jpgI managed to drive to work, but the high winds blew me all over the road,(Good thing it was 4 am).

I witnessed the funniest thing this morning, I watched a shopping cart flying across a parking lot about 90 MPH and hit a cement block used in the parking lots.

When the cart hit the slab, it did a complete 360 landing right back on it’s wheels.

That was insane, it’s too bad I was the only witness. I swear it happened.

I was glad when I finally saw someone pull up and park next to my car. Let them pay the $500 deductible for the shopping cart damage. ;)

high winds.jpgNow I know why I will never live anywhere near the ocean, or Gulf. I can’t handle extreme weather like that. I kept waiting for a schard of wood or glass or a fork to impale me as I ran to the door of my building.

Fork stuck in tree.jpgShoot, at that speed anything is a possible projectile.

I wonder if Boulder even still exists? They’re a little higher up elevation and usually get it worse. Eventually the wind died down around 9am.

My kids cleaned up the backyard before I could take a picture. It was a freggin mess.

Elway rookie.jpg

Football note: All I can say about my Denver Broncos is: John Elway thanks for the years man. Somehow it  always seemed more exciting when you ran the show. Now,…not so much, oh well, maybe next year.

I’m a little under the weather today, so I’m not going to be hosting the blog radio program tonight at 9pm. I’m not trying to weasel out of it whatsoever (I will do it), I just have a stomach thing and lets leave it at that.

For now the wind is gone and so am I…D

We showed up early for the Broncos game so we could get a good parking spot to do some serious tailgating.

Usually 3 1/2 hours before kickoff will do it, but not always. Today it worked.

Andy and Aimlee.jpg

We snagged a really good spot, kicked back and waited for our KC Chiefs friends Andy and Amalie to show up.

Then we grilled up some tasty brats, some pulled pork, and a can of beans.

Perfect food to absorb the beverages.

We saw the Bronco helmet wagon driving around tossing out T-Shirts, but we didn’t manage to get one.

Broncoafc.jpg                 Krista and I at the Broncos AFC Championship game against the Steelers

                                   Heres a clip : AFC Champ.AVI

Heres another clip..you can feel the intensity: AFC Champ 2.AV

I was offered over $800 a piece for those AFC Championship tickets and Krista wouldn’t sell. I begged her and she still wouldn’t sell.

The Broncos played like they didn’t care and they got crushed by the Steelers. Right after the game was over Krista said “You know, we should have sold those tickets”.

Next weekend we will be attending Broncos Fan Fair.fanfair.gifEvery player, coach, select Broncos Alumni and even the cheerleaders will be there. Autograph sessions, picture sessions, stuff for the kids to do. It will be our first time there and we are going both days. I’ll do an entry for each day.

Unfortunately I’ll miss Rockies autograph Sunday on the 8th..I hate that.

I’m really looking forward to this next homestand. Hopefully with the home crowd behind the Rockies it’ll spark something This last round of losses has been difficult.

                                                         Go Rockies…D
