You don't want to be in the hole when you face Cole
10/26/08 World Series Game 3, Rays at Phillies
It's two hours earlier here in Colorado than the east coast and I found myself nodding off towards the end of this drizzly late inning, World Series thriller.
An hour and a half rain delay put 45,800 baseball fans on hold, but didn't dampen their spirits in the least.
Mostly because they just wanted to see the game take place as some point in the evening and not waste the fifty they spent to park.
<-----Speaking of waste. Check out what this dude did. Can you say "breath mint". You can't make this stuff up.
Phillies get the ball rolling in the first inning with Utlley grounding out and scoring Jimmy Rollins.
Rays even it up in the second when Carl Crawford was able to steal third and then scored off of a Gabe Cross's sacrifice fly.
Carlos Ruiz then homered with two out to put the Phillies back up 2-1.
In the sixth inning Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley accomplish something that has only been done thirteen other times in the World Series, they hit back to back home runs.
Time to give an old man some credit .
Jamie Moyer, the second oldest man to ever start a World Series game is just shy of his 46th birthday, yea 46th. Jamie allowed three runs on five hits. and pitched a little over six innings.
Phillies fans got amped after Crawford hit an infield single in the seventh which Jamie Moyer dove for, caught and glove tossed to Howard who caught it with his bare hand. Umpire called the runner safe , the replay clearly showed he was out. Props for that valiant effort from Jamie. It reminded me of John Elway in a baseball sort of way.
It figures, just as I nod out for the eighth inning, the Rays step up and even things up. I did wake up in time to see the ninth inning. and I'm glad I did.
It was a perfect World Series finish.
Bases loaded, ninth inning, Carlos Ruiz grounds a hit down the third base line, scores Eric Bruntlett and Phillies take game three 5-4, with the first walk-off infield single in World Series history.
And to think, I almost missed it.
Game 4 is today. The Rays have to win.
Being down 3-1 when they face Cole Hamels in Game 5 is a deathwish. The dude is 4-0 with a 1.55 ERA in the postseason, and the game is in Philadelphia. So the game tonight is must win for the Rays.
Sounds like a good game to me...Go Phillies.
