I love baseball and I don’t mind cold weather. Combine cold wind, rain and baseball and that’s a mix I don’t care for.
The game today was the first professional sporting event I have ever attended with my parents.
My parents enjoy watching some sports but the closest professional “Live” anything is in Edmonton, Alberta.
That’s 350 miles away.
My parents live in Canada.
Attending major professional sporting events is not common place for them.
So the fact that they attended this game with me despite the weather really meant a lot.
My mom said she enjoyed it and my dad seemed mildly entertained :)
We bailed out at the bottom of the fifth inning. At least my parents were able to witness the Rockies score all of their runs.
You’ve got to love Dexter Fowler. This dude is already making a name for himself. He crushed his second homer of the season tonight off of Chan Ho Park.
At one point in the game I could hear some people in the crowd chanting “Chan Ho Walk”, that’s funny.
I’ve mentioned a few times in my blog that I think Dinger the dinosaur should have a little/lot more of a masculine appearance.
With all due respect to the guy inside of that big festive muppet, I think Dinger looks like a cross between the purple Teletubbie and Barney.
As you can tell in the picture below, it being Easter did nothing help out old Dinger’s masculinity. I bet this guy goes to bed every night praying they change his costume or promote him to Usher :) so he can get out of that embarassing purple/pink sweatsuit.
I’ve got it, since Dinger is a “required to be a people person”, lets make him a beer vendor and make Captain Earthman the Rockies Official Mascot.
He owns a set of bunny ears and he’s probably tired of carrying that heavy beer around for three hours.
See if I think long enough I can come up with a solution for anything
Here’s a thought….How about a mascot called the “Rock Man”? He would sort of look like the Michelin man but would look like he was made of boulders.
That would be a freggin tough looking mascot. I think the kids would dig it too.
I figured the Rockies had game three in the bag with the great start they had and the fact they owned the lead until the 8th inning.
Corpas and Street let the lead slip and the Rockies lose to the Phillies 7-5, thus allowing the Phillies to take two of three games and win the set at Coors Field .
Rockies are now 3-3. Next up,…the Cubs at Wrigley.
I didn’t show up for batting practice as I figured there wouldn’t be one,..I was right.
Attending the game- 1 Point
We didn’t stay to the end of the game because I was quite done with the rain and cold at this point and figured for sure this game would be called and the Rockies would win.
No such luck today
Total points today’s game = 2
Overall total this season = 13 Points
Here are a few more pictures I took…Clint Barmes
Here’s a random crowd shot, look how everyone is dressed.
Ok now to R-Luv’s points. This girl is good. She was on it and she discovered a great way to snag points was by taking pictures with the Ushers.
I have to make a change to the Hagg’n points but R-Luv was so hardcore into Hagg’n she gets credit for all her pictures because she earned those points before I fine tuned the Usher picture point thing.
Here is how the Usher thing will work from now on. In order to have the point count the picture has to have the actual Hagger and the Usher in it. The other change is you can’t earn more than five points per game using Usher pictures or autographs.
I have to put a cap on it. As far as hot dog/brat points go, you can only earn a point if “you” actually eat it.
Remember this first season of Hagg’n is experimental and I’ll have to tweak things now and then.
Here are R-Luv’s stats as she reported them to me:
What a game! And what a madhouse! I’ve never seen the stadium that full. Yikes!
I got pictures of 18 ushers, they got a kick out of being asked
2- hot dogs
attending the game
So, I think that gives me a total of 23 points. Here are a few of the pictures I got, I
think you’ll enjoy them. One of the pictures is Hurdle having words with the umpire. I
think that could be another category for getting points.
These are the three pictures R-Luv/Marianne sent me.
R-LUV-23 points in one game.
ROCKPILE RANTER– 10 points in 3 games
Thanks Marianne and Good Job!
Donnie’s first game is on the 15 th. So far nobody else has reported any stats. I’m having fun with this and I know R-Luv is. Interested?? Scroll back a few entries and check out what Hagg’n is and how to accumulate points while attending a baseball game.
Thanks for choosing the Rockpile Rant…DPS- Did anyone see the fan wearing the yellow poncho jump onto the field and pick-up that foul ball? He actually looked like an Usher for a second so I’m sure they kept the camera on him for a bit.
PSS- Game 7 Rockies lose to the Cubs today 4-0, ouch.
Incredible, what a day! On my way to Coors Field I realized I forgot my glove. No joke, the first game and I left my glove at home. I turned around and went back and got it. I figured for sure that I’d blown my chance at a good place in line but lady luck was on my side.
As we were walking up I could see a huge line of people and my heart sunk. Upon closer inspection I realized the line was for people waiting to hopefully purchase Rockpile tickets.
Number one like it should be.
They opened the gates and I was the first one through, As I worked my way over to the Pavilion I saw the Rockies out on the field and when I entered the bleachers I could only see one kid way on the other side of the Pavilion.
I worked my way down to field level and saw Jorge De La Rosa, Ubaldo Jimenez and Franklin Morales in the outfield chatting. A ball was hit to them and Jorge picked it up.
He looked into the bleachers and the only one standing there was me. I held up my glove, didn’t say a word and he tossed it to me. Just like that the Hagg’n begins.
Thanks Jorge for starting my season out right. Before Jorge tossed me that ball Helton had hit a BP homer and a kid had snagged it. The ball Jorge tossed me was the first baseball tossed to a fan at Coors Field this seaon. I also hold the honor of snagging the first baseball tossed to a fan during Game 1 of Rockies spring training in Tucson.
Not a huge thing but worth mentioning I figure.
You know that fan that goes way overboard chasing a ball and winds up looking like an idiot.
I was that fan.
I was tracking a BP homer and had to lean over a row of bleachers and extend as far as I could to snag it. The ball hit my glove then rolled out and started rolling down the stairs.
I started stumbling over the bleachers in an attempt to snag that ball I dropped. About half way through chasing that ball I realized that I looked like a total moron.
So what do I do in that situation?
Do I stop right then and try and save my dignity, or realizing that I already looked stupid follow through and get the ball so I can say yeah I looked stupid but at least I got the ball?
I’m a Hagger so I chose to get the ball and take my critism. Nobody was harmed in the pursuit of the baseball, just my ego. Plus there’s always a witness when you don’t need one.
Anyways, that was ball two, Hagg’n is on baby.
While at batting practice I ran in to Marianne aka R-Luv, she was Hagg’n big and bad. She was going around getting pictures of the Ushers earning her Hagg’n points.
Guess who else was at this game? My buddy Vinny Castilla was at the home opener.
Vinny, I thought you told me you weren’t a player?
If that’s the case, I guess I’m not a blogger who takes pictures of you.
Does it look like he’s flexing for the camera?
I was able to meet up with an old buddy of mine named Chuck.
Chuck rode up from Colorado Springs in the Coors Light RV. I’ve known this guy for over twenty years.
Here is Chuck and my wife Krista in front of the RV.
I hope your squirming in your pants over your prediction. I’m not saying that the Rockies won’t come in 4th place, that could totally happen. But I love the fact that the Rockies have everyone who made that prediction thinking twice about the Rockies right now.
Congrats to Marquis, goes to show you what a Veteran can do when called upon to get the job done.
I have 400 more pictures I could post but I’m going to save them for “Rockpile Ranter’s PIcture Blog”
Now to my Hagg’n score for the day.
Two snagged baseballs, one which bounced out of my glove and was snagged rolling down the steps = 3 points.
As shot of the scoreboard at the end of the game = 1 point.
Total for the game = 7 points.
I’m still working on how to count pictures of Ushers. It’s not hard to take pictures of Ushers but getting a picture of you with an Usher is hard because you have to ask someone else to take the picture. I might need some help with this.
I’m off to Game 2 agains the Phillies in an hour or so. The Rockies impressed the hell out of me yesterday. Let’s keep this train rolling.
I really could overwhelm you with pictures and a monster blog today, and as much as I’d like to do just that, tomorrow is the Rockies home opener and my folks are arriving in town so I’m a short on time but I’ll do my best.
Let me tell you that this Power Aid contest that Hunter won was really a good time and all of the folks who helped with this promotion were really on their game.
Inside the backpacks were a couple bottles of PowerAid, wrist bands, two T-Shirts, a Power Aid water bottle, a towel and an Autographed Carmelo Anthony jersey.
This jersey was the real deal too. Not a replica jersey like the one I was sport’n.
That was really cool of them and one helluva way to get greeted.
Hunter and I were floored.
Hunter told me later, “Dad I know you want this jersey but I want to have it framed”. I told him I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want an autographed Melo jersey but I didn’t want “his” jersey.
I tell you what though..I’m jealous as hell.
After the presentation of the backpacks we all headed over to the trailer where they do all of the editing for the basketball game. They were really nice to us and explained in a nutshell what they do before and after the game inside this mobile trailer.
When we finished touring the trailer we walked over to the hallway and that was where we waited for Melo to show meet us..
While we were waiting I saw Anthony Carter walk by, Renaldo Balkman, Chauncey Billups and Chris Anderson (Birdman).
When Melo walked in as he passd me he saw I had on his # jersey and he gave me a hand slap.
Then he walked up to Hunter and the other winner and said hi and talked to them a little bit.
Hunter had a few questions he wanted to ask and Melo was REALLY cool about answering them. Melo was totally a class act tonight and it was really nice to see Hunter keep his stuff together and not get nervous and forget how to talk.
Here’s a video of Hunter asking Melo a few questions:
Then we headed out to the court to wait for Chris Marlowe (FSN play by-play announcer) to give meet the kids and tell them a little bit about what he does.
He shook my hand I said “Nice to meet you Mr. Marlowe” and he hit me back with “Call me Chris”. Chris I know you’re a busy guy but thanks for spending some time with “my guy”.
He writes a really good blog for the Nuggets and you have no idea how bad I wanted to slip him a Ranter card and talk some blogging with him. I reminded myself that tonight was Hunter’s night not mine.
Hunter was so good and so polite to all of these new people. I was really proud of him.
Here’s video of Chris explaining some stuff to the kids:
Enjoy the picture show and half-time video of “The Rubber Man”. Let me warn you about the Rubber Man, this video is way beyond strange.
We headed up to our seats on the first level Row 15 and watched the Nuggets go back and forth a little bit with the Thunder. In the end the Nuggets were just too strong with Melo scoring 31 points, JR smith scoring 17 and Nene scoring 21.
Nuggets win 122-110 and I would like to thank PowerAid, FSN Rocky Mountain, Altitude Sports, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Marlowe, Pepsi Center the Denver Nuggets and anyone else who may have had a hand in this once in a lifetime experience for Hunter.
Best beard of the evening————>
Tomorrow is the day, opening day at Coors Field.
I work half a day, go home for an hour then head out to Coors field for day one of Hagg’n, tagg’n, snagg’n and making memories so I can be bragg’n.
I’m D,….The rhyming Ranter with the funky fresh banter. Old Skool, but not an old fool.
4/7/09 Good Luck Rockies !!
One of the reason I enjoy blogging on MLBLogs is I’m surrounded by people who have a passion for baseball. I tell you what, I have butterflies in my stomach in anticipation of the Rockies home opener. Is it just me? Blogging has given me a new perspective on baseball and I feel like I’m the verge of seeing something special from the Rockies.
An overlooked underdog team just waiting for the right moment to show the world that they’re a force to be reckoned with.
I believe, but then I’ve always believed…D
We dropped the cable package we had because we’re moving soon and now I can’t watch the game at home anymore.
Let’s just say the game that I heard was a great game. Props to the D-Backs for taking this one. I was proud of the way the Rockies played today and I can’t wait to “see” more.
Brandon Webb was off of his game and Aaron Cook seem to follow suit. Wiith that being the case it was an all out slugfest that didn’t take long to get rolling.
Cook gave up the first home run to Lopez in the first inning. Cook went 2 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and six runs, four of those runs in the third inning,…ouch. On a bright not Cook right now is batting 1000.
Stud of the Rockies for the first game was Brad Hawpe, 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s. Right now Hawpe is batting .750.
Not being able to see this game on TV today is my punishment for not being in Phoenix to support my team and see this game live. I try not to question it, I know it’s just some sort F’ked up charmic balance that keeps me grounded…usually. It sucks because sometimes I just wanna fly.
Congrats to my friend Rick and his wife on the birth of their daughter.
My deepest sympathies got out to my friend Willa on the very recent loss of her husband who had been battling a long illness. She’s a sweet lady and very kind.
The Nuggets/Thunder game with Hunter is on Wednesday and Hunter has come up with a few good questions to ask Carmelo Anthony.
1. What other sports do you like to play?
2. Do you have any pets? (We have two pugs, a puggle and two frogs).
Hunter and I are huge Nuggets fans (if you couldn’t tell from a lot of my previous blog entries), and we’re really looking forward to the entire evening. Hunter is playing basketball in grade 4 this year so he’ll be diggin on all of this.
I’m not sure what the ending totals were, but the last I looked it was like 70/30…Congrats.
Possible rain on the home opener for the Rockies. Who the F’ck knows here.
The weather report changes daily/hourly so I’m just going to hope for no rain and no snow and be ready for anything.
Anybody that’s going to Rockies opening day wanna give a shout out? I’ll take your picture, you know cause that’s what I do.
Tomorrow I’ll post the questions for the Rockies Fan Profile. Anyone want to offer up some last minute good questions? As always I’d love to hear your suggestions.
Click on the link below to check out my take on 2008:
Just popped over to “The Maxx” to check the brackets and there’s an interesting match-up going on right now.
Rays Renegade against Diatribe of a Law Student. I read both of their blogs and both are outstanding in their own way. Tough call, so in fairness I can’t plug one or the other.
But I wish both of you luck.
The Rockpile Rant is up next against Eat, Sleep, Baseball. I have no idea what to expect because I had no idea I’d actually make it this far. Seems Julia’s Rants, Red State Blue State and the # 1 blog (whatever it’s called) are all history leaving me the only top five blog still in contention.
I don’t really understand this bracket, nor do I even plan to try. It’s all a crapshoot and I’m along for the interesting and controversial ride while pointing out the cool stuff
We’re getting ready for another potential “major” snowstorm to hit us the Denver area tonight. I’m ok with that because I’m off for the weekend and as far as I’m concerned Mother Nature needs to dump all she can because once Coors Field opens I’m not putting up with that snow bullsh*t anymore.
BASEBALL AND SNOW DO NOT PEACEFULLY CO-EXIST
Oh F*ck no!
No way, not ever, never, no. April 5th is officially the cutoff for new snow (That way the snow has time to melt before the home opener on the 10th).
There’s nothing quite like catching a baseball when your fingers are numb and then getting that cold finger sting from the impact of the baseball.
I suppose the runners could use snowshoes but how would you spot the baseball, wouldn’t it just blend in?
You choose the caption
PS..Jay Cutler you can KMA you MF.
4/2/09 Rockies beat the D-Backs today 7-4
I’m willing to bet somewhere in Tucson is a slightly upset and confused Manny Corpas. Manny lost the closer job to Huston Street today. I’m not sure I saw that move coming, I’m not sure Manny did either.
I go back and forth with how I feel about Corpas. When I form an opinion of a Rockies player it’s not just on their baseball ability.
(Manny signing Hunter’s baseball)
My son and I had a few encounters with Manny at the beginning of a few 2008 Rockies batting practices. Both times Manny had the opportunity to really shine as a baseball player/human being and he took the lesser road.
On a positive note, Corpas seemed to be more aware of his fans as the season went on.
Anyways it’s not like he’s unemployed, he just gets to go to work a little earlier.
Street suffered a hip flexor strain last season and subsequently lost his closing position.
Rockies signed Huston to a one-year contract for $4.5 million.
Corpas makes $875,000. That includes a $125,000 prorated signing bonus and buyout on option). Corpas is in the first year of four-year $9.025 million contract which has an option for 2012 and 2013.
I wish them both luck.
Check this out, on April 8th my son Hunter and I will be going to the Pepsi Center early to take a tour of the Pepsi Center and FSN Video trailer where they do all of the editing and such for the Denver Nugget home games.
After that we get to meet Carmelo Anthony and Hunter is allowed to ask a few questions.
They suggested Hunter practice the questions beforehand as most kids get nervous and clam up when they actually meet Melo.
Then we’ll get to meet one of the FSN announcers. After all that Hunter and I get to watch the Nuggets warm-up from court-side. How cool is that? This is a prize package sponsored by Power-Aid/King Soopers and it’s pretty sweet.
The Nuggets play the Thunder, game is at 7pm. Just in case you’re wondering, no we don’t get to sit court-side for the game.
Those tickets are $675.00 a piece.
Expect a picture show of epic proportions after that game.
It will be good practice for me.
A little Nuggets basketball two days before the Rockies home opener.
Now that’s a lot better than sitting at home,…waiting… Go Rockies…D
