It’s our X-mas present to each other.
We headed down to Colorado Springs yesterday, our friends Bill and Kathy were having their annual X-mas party and usually a bunch of my long time friends show up. It’s a good time and it’s been a while since we’ve all got together.
This is Bill. I have known Bill going on twenty years. Of the group of guys I hang with, Bill has given us all a place to stay at one point or another.
This guy is one of a kind, and would do anything for a friend.
Check this out: Bill’s record collection.
There’s something more personal about owning records. Maybe it’s the care that goes into owning them, maybe it’s the artwork that you can actually see, hold an feel.
Maybe it’s the sound, you can feel the music when a record is playing.
A record has a history, they’re vintage, and there’s always a story about how it was obtained, whether it’s a demo, limited print, etc?
Go ahead, take a guess at how many records are pictured here?
I’ll post the winners name, just one guess each.
This is my buddy Jack. Jack is Bill’s son. Jack is part of the Mobile Blogging Unit bound for Tucson.
Jack and another buddy Chad, own/run a business called Mountain Draft.
This is Shaun and Kim.
Kim is married to Jack.
Kim told me several times last night to “Please take Jack to Tucson with me”.
My wife agrees, even the ladies need a break from the guys once in a while.
Shaun is a single dad of two teens (one income), and there is not a person whose morals, integrity and selflessness I respect more than this man.
He is also a founding member of our band “Ear Infection”.
Shaun has worked in the record store industry since he was 18 and knows his sheet. This guy has a hell of a record collection himself.
Got a question about a record, it’s value, or rarity? Give call a Shaun a call at Independent records in Colorado Springs. Tell him I sent you.
Chuck is a former Beer Salesman turned Supervisor. He’s a single dad of four kids who also resides in Colorado Springs.
Chuck is the “Worlds greatest Dad”. I really mean that.
Chuck is a hardworking guy, who always puts his kids first. I respect his patience drive and commitment to what he believes is right.
He wasn’t going around telling anyone, but Willow (his daughter pictured in the chair), was going around telling everyone that Chuck had a “big date” coming up soon.
Good Luck Chuck !
This is Pete (aka P-ta), Pete is married to Kendra and they are expecting their first child together in March. Kendra has two teens from a previous marriage.
This will be Pete’s first child (it’s a girl).
Pete’s a Realtor in Colorado Springs and is a founding member of the band known as “Ear Infection”.
Looking to buy a house in Colorado Springs?
Google Peter Browning (or email me), this dude will hook you up.
Me, I floated around, played some pool with some people I’d never met before. I decided to talk a little smack, and here’s what happened when I told the group I would be seeing Cheech and Chong live on Sunday and it’s all sold out.
If that wasn’t bad enough, that was followed by this:
Back off, your all just jealous. I’m not sure why my wife is in the corner flipping me off, she’s going with me. Don’t hate guys, I promise I’ll tell Cheech you said hi.
Merry X-mas from my friends and I to you…Ranter style…Be on the lookout for my “Tribute to Cheech and Chong” coming soon…D
As bad as I want the baseball season to start, attending the Rockies Pavilion Party last night made it worse. But in a good way.
Maybe it was seeing all those familiar faces. I don’t know many names in this group, but I’ve seen most of them at the games.
They made us feel welcome and I appreciate that.
I was told 7pm which made me exactly a half hour late…I guess in hippy time that’s perfect..kidding.
I have a thing about being late,…I’m not. It’s an Army thing.
If I know that there isn’t going to be a batting practice, sometimes I’ll skip that game. If you can’t make them all, you tend to be rather selective.
We usually just buy Rockpile tickets and at somepoint during the game we “upgrade” our seats. It’s cool because you can get several different camera angles.
I got to see Captain Earthman off duty.
I found out “Earth” is heading down to Tucson the same time as the MBU.
When he found out we’re going to have the MBU parked at Hi Corbett for the first eight days of spring training, he got pretty excited. I have a feeling we’ll be having a few brews with Earth while we’re down in Tucson.
Remind me when we’re down there Earth, I’ll pour you a beer for a change brotha!
Captain Earthman, Super Vendor, Super Grandpa.
Earth heads south every February and works the Rockies spring training games. Too bad he already bought his plane ticket, he could have rode down with us.
Dan was there with his wife Julie and kids.
Dan’s a good dude and he introduced me to some people that I recognized, but hadn’t formally met.
He also gave the Rockpile Rant a few plugs. You can’t see it, but Dan’s nametag says “Emily’s Dad”.
Thanks brotha..Have a good trip.
Here’s a video of Emily and the whole group singing “Take me out to the Ballgame”.
Below is a shot of Tom and Earth.
Last April, Dan gave Hunter and I tickets for seats in first row of the Pavilion. The seats were right next to Tom. He was fun to watch the game with, and was really cool to Hunter and I. Nice guy and familiar sight at Coors Field.
Here’s Hunter dreaming about baseball.
Here’s Mylee not dreaming about baseball.
Here’s the back of Robert’s Harmon’s jersey with a personalized autograph from Ryan Spilborghs.
In case you hadn’t heard, Ryan Spilborghs got married a few weeks back.
Now you know what I know.
It seemed like a good time was had by all. I’m the newbie to this group, so I plan to put forth some effort next season to get to know this crew better.
This really is a great bunch of Rockies fans.
Hanging around these fans last night gave me a great idea.
For each game that I attend, I’d like to do a season ticket holder fan profile. It would be a picture of them, seat location, their favorite Rockies player, favorite all- time player, how long they’ve been a season ticket holder, etc.
You know, give them some props for being loyal and supporting the Rockies.
I think that would be cool, and you heard it here first.
Cool Note: About six months ago I sent out six 3×5 cards in the mail to various Colorado Rockies Players. I received one back from Omar Quintinilla within five days of mailing them. That was it, until today. As I rifled through my mail, I was staring at the envelope I had addressed to Matt Herges six months ago sitting in my hand.
I opened it up and this is what I found.
Thank you Matt.
Some people have no X-mas spirit. A few months back I bought some lettering for the back of my Rockies Jersey. It was the letters to spell Rockpile Ranter. Yesterday I finally had some time to lay out the letters and see how it looked.
I remember opening up the letter when it arrived in the mail. I checked and was sure all the letters were all there. Then I put them away for safekeeping.
Somehow I lost my freggin “P”
So I’m wondering what the hell I’m going to do. Changing my blog name isn’t an option, that can come back and bite you. After some thought, I decided to contact the guy on Ebay who
sold me the lettering.
I mentioned that I wasn’t accusing him of not sending my “P”, I was just in need of a good “P” so I could complete my “Pile”.
He responded back with “seven dollars for a “P”.
Some people, I tell you.
I hope this is the last time I’m ever in bad need of a “P”.
It’s bad enough just needing a “P”, but paying twice for a “P” pretty pathetic. I guess that’s the chance you take with online retailers. No face to face interaction.
It’s harder to tell me it’s going to cost seven dollars when I’m standing right in front of you :)
So in hindsight, always check and make sure you have your “P” because there is nothing worse than a P-less Pile.
Tomorrow night is the 2nd Annual, X-mas get together dinner of the Pavilion season ticket holders at Coors Field. I was working on coming up with a name for this event…I’ll admit, what I have is weak. For a rhyming Ranter, I don’t have much.
Here’s what I’ve got:
1. Rockies Regulars X-mas Bash
2. Pavilion Posse Party or Pavilion Party
3. Pavilion Seat Meet and Eat..My fav.
If they don’t choose any of those, I won’t be offended.
I’ve changed the dates for the Mobile Blogging Units departure for Rockies Spring Training.
Instead of arriving in Tucson at the end of February, we’re going to make it there in time for opening day (Feb, 25th), and catch a bunch of home (Hi-Corbett Field), games during the first week.
That gives me a day and a half road time to make it from Colorado to Tucson.
The MBU will be returning on March 3rd or 4th.
I’ve been playing around with this blog talk radio thing. I think it would be cool/fun if I could do a small internet radio thing at the end of each day in Tucson. Possibly do a few interviews with some folk down in Tucson, or possibly a Minor or Major league star?
Ok, I might be dreaming there, but you never know?
I’m going to try a test show on December 30.
Here’s why I want to do this radio thing. For a good part of my life I was one of those guys who kept stuff bottled up inside.
Nobody knew how I felt or what I was thinking unless I wanted them to.
I can tell you from experience, that’s not a good way to live. See, I Rant to help keep from getting mad.
Here is what I have managed to accomplish this last year:
I wanted to have a permanant record of our baseball collection for reference someday.
Secondly, I needed a place to vent the things that annoy me in my daily life. MLBlogs.com was a perfect match and the Rockpile Rant was born.
2. I got on an airplane, and stayed on. Say what you want to, this was by far my biggest accomplishment of the year.
3. I’ve expanded my circle of friends. It’s not easy to be my friend. I’ve had the same buddies for 20+ years. I don’t trust many, and you only get a couple of chances with me. I guess that explained my small circle of friends.
I trust them, every one of them and they trust me. It’s cool when you have that.
Now I find meeting new people not to be scary or uncomfortable (there are exceptions), I find it to be interesting and rewarding.
Thanks to all of you who comment on the Rant. I plan to spend the next year being a better commenter backer.
I’m not sure exactly at what point this year the change happened, but it happened, and is still happening. I’m not all the way there yet, but I can tell you it’s hard to be shy at a baseball game when your the Rockpile Ranter…This leads me to # 4.
4. I plan to dabble in the Blog Internet talk radio as a way of overcoming a fear of public speaking. I will be doing a 15 minute call-in segment on December 30th at 9 pm Colorado time. Just in time to say I did it before the end of the year. I’ll post all the links and stuff soon. Do me favor, if you listen, don’t expect much. As with blogging, the more you do it, the better you get…and the first one’s going to suck I’m sure. I just need to do it. I’ll have cool music, and maybe snacks.
5. I got to pretend I worked for the Nuggets. That was something I will always remember. Thank you B.
6. I made it through another year of being a husband and a father and a (young) grandfather.(I miss you Mason). It can be hard work, but it’s a labor of love :)
I’m using you MLBLogs.com. I’m using you to become a better person…D
You really do meet “all kinds” of people in the Army.
But I haven’t, I’m not even close.
As I rapidly age, I’m starting to figure out that life is about learning everyday and growing as a person, not about thinking I know enough about people to make the statement I did in my first sentence.
Ok, that’s deep for me.
On a different note, this just came to me, I’m not saying that nobody has ever said this before, or been quoted saying it, but it just popped into my head.
Quote from me: “Half of marriage is being able to admit when your wrong, the other half is being able to tell her she’s right”. :) I’ve got half of it down.
If your married you’ll get it, if your not, well I’m sure you’ll find someone.
Ever get the message on your computer that says “Password will expire in 10 days, do you want to change now?
I’m curious, do you change it right then, or do you procrastinate?
I’m sure exactly how long you wait to change it says a bunch of crap about who “you” are, and what type of distinct personality you have.
I don’t want to know about all that, I just want to know if anyone else puts this off to the last day?
I even factor in weekends. It’s similar to mailing your taxes on the last day I suppose.
I’m not exactly sure why I wait, I guess I just don’t want to change it unless I absolutely have to. I don’t succumb to peer pressure anymore.
You know, the little business cards that say buy 7 and get the 8th free or offer a discount.
Check your wallet or purse, you probably have a couple.
In my entire life, I have not ever redeemed one of these. I lose the F’n things before I ever even come close to the freebie.
I don’t need any more crap in my wallet.
Oh, I hate those little hand held punch things, I don’t like the clicking sound they make.
Wait,…I’m not done yet.
Hello retail America (excluding organic grocery stores), it’s now nine days before X-mas.
You know, the time of year where a business makes it or breaks it.
I have to believe you’re scheduling a full crew of cashiers to handle the mobs of people… right?
I mean the faster you ring-em and sting-em, the sooner you can do it again, right?
But exactly who we blame for the long lines becomes a bit sketchy.
Like I just said, I can’t fathom the idea that during X-mas a busy store would have twelve available registers, and only three cashiers ringing up product.
Two of whom have been waiting to go on break.
All I can figure is it must be mass employee call outs.
I’m sure some of the employees are legitimately sick (this is the cold and flu season), the rest probably call-in sick so they can finish their X-mas shopping.
Do you see the climax I’m building to here, if the stores schedule a full staff, and half of them call in sick, and the other half of them go shopping, you’ve just added a huge influx of people to this shopping side of this equasion, and a down flux of cashiers to struggle with the overload.
There’s no balance and nobody wins.
That is why we have long lines during X-Mas.
It’s not the exactly the stores fault (schedule extra cashiers just in case), it’s more the cashier’s lack of work ethic.
So props go out to the cashiers that show up for their scheduled shift.
It’s a good thing you do, you keep America moving.
It was awesome the way I broke that down,…..I got skills.
Getting back there isn’t an exact science for me yet, and tonight’s experiment was a flop.
It was painful to watch the Nuggets defense (or lack of it) last season, that’s how it felt this evening watching the Golden State Warriors.
I figured the Nuggets had this game going into it, especially at home.
It was my first time.
They bust out a ladder and some poor b’sturd has to climb up and try to fix it while the whole arena is watching, and waiting.
Did I mention the that everyone is watching?
All those eyes.
People like to stare in these situations. It’s like a car accident.
Do you think this dude has special non-slip shoes on for just such an occasion?
In times like this, cut the guy a break and bring out the cheerleaders.
Only they could take the crowd’s focus off of this dude.
With the game paused, the players and crowd start to get restless.
For a moment, the entire world is on hold.
Talk about pressure.
The suicide rate for these guys is scary, the NBA really should do something to help these people.
At least he can’t see the stares. He can only feel them.
This man is one of the NBA’s unsung heros.
Linas Kleiza was played just over 27 minutes and scored 6 points. He went 0-4 from the three-point range. However, he did make this shot.
Did I mention that the Denver Nugget Cheerleaders are insane? Just check out this picture of bodies flying everywhere . Again, you can click to expand.
Just before the half, K-Mart took an ugly spill as he was going in for a layup. C.J Watson bumped him and he fell to the floor hard, landing on his right side, I cringed.
Kenyon looked like he was done for, and I was thinking “Oh man, not again”.
Then all of a sudden he jumped up like nothing happened, and was back in the game. Let me tell you, the dude hit the floor hard. Props to you K-Mart, better ice that thing.
Nene had 11 points and was 5-6 from field-goal range.
A bad picture of Invesco Field at Mile High
I’m Don the Rockpile Ranter, and I’m just happy you stopped by…The Blogtalkradio is something I’m experimenting with for possible use at Spring Training…D
The Rockies had to non-tender CF Willy Taveras, after figuring out they wouldn’t be able to trade “Speedy” before Fridays deadline for offering contracts to arbitration eligible players.
The Rockies were trying to swing a deal with Taveras and Juan Morillio going to the Nationals for pitcher Tim Redding, but the deal fell flat.
So Willy T is Free. Actually Redding is too for that matter. I tell you what, if “Speedy” could up his OBP just a wee bit, you might really have something there. You need to be on base to “steal ‘em”.
Starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa, and relievers Huston Street, Taylor Buchholz and Jason Grilli were tendered offers, along with Clint Barmes and Garrett Atkins.
Me, my head still hurts, but I’m on the upswing. Hunter and I are heading to the Nuggets game tonight.
I could possibly have a pair of backstage passes for us.
Third level seats tonight, but the backstage pictures should be cool.
I’m hoping to get Chauncey Billups, Balkman, and Birdman’s autograph tonight…D
I’ll be attending a special Dinner with the family on next Thursday.
It’s a dinner/get together, for the season ticket holders in the Pavilion at Coors Field.
<–(These are not Rockies season ticket holders, and will not be attending the dinner party).
This dinner/party doesn’t officially have a name yet, so I’ve been challenged to come up with one (Not much rhymes with pavilion).
It’s going to be a great time. Such a fun group of people.
A Mets fan, a Braves fan, a Yankees fan, and a Rockies fan are climbing up a mountian. On the way to the top, each is arguing about how loyal they are to their team and what they would do for that team.
Upon reaching the top, the Mets fan shouts, “This is for the Mets!!!” and throw’s himself off the top of the mountian. Next the Braves fan yells, “I love Atlanta”..This is for you Braves!!” and he too, jumps off. Finally when then the Rockies fan reaches the top he screams, “This is for EVERYONE!!” and pushes the Yankee fan off the mountian.
More when I get it…D
I was tempted to us the word bong in my rhyming title, but decided against it.
Damn head cold, I could feel it coming. It’s like having your head in a vice.
I don’t get sick very often, I probably got this crap on my trip to Chicago.
Strange new germs out there (and I drank the water).
This years present is so cool, I’m afraid with my head cold and the news of this, I could spontaneously combust. It’s just too much.
C’mon you know you do.
Before they did all of those funny movies, they were a stand-up comedy team touring the US and Canada.
These two dudes pumped out a bunch of comedy records. Back in the day, everybody who was anybody had at least one.
Below is my personal Cheech and Chong collection. There may be a few more records out there, but not many.
The Cheech and Chong heads have removable skulls. For storage I guess?
Notice the Big Bambu still has the original rolling paper.
Hey we all age, so now they look like this, and have been touring the country with their stand-up comedy act. Tommy Chong’s wife Shelby is the opening act.
No special tickets or anything, I was just happy they added the third show.
It’s Sunday night Dec 21..An early X-mas present.
Their records are imbedded in my brain, as they were extremely popular when I was a teen in Canada.
There you have it, another thing knocked off of my “List of things to do before I croak”.
If The Who can do it, so can you.
I’ll probably do a special blog after the Cheech and Chong show dedicated to them.
Seeing this show is all I want for X-mas.
I don’t want to outright spoil what I got for my kids (they don’t read this blog in the offseason), but just in case, it rhymes with sockhand.
I think it will be a cool gift to play with the whole family. I’m already a Rockstar, have you seen my music video?? Check it out.
Please don’t slam us. There’s a reason why this short little video clip is the only one us in existance. But hey, I’ve got a music video…Do you?
I’m starting to feel the spirit. Just need to kick this head cold. I cant see Cheech and Chong with a foggy head now can I?…
Oh yea, my special announcement. Robert Harmon, If you read this or Zack’s Hamples blog (listed on my side bar), you know of him.
Long time Coors field snagger, Barry Bonds fake ball, good dude.
Well Robert has decided to join forces with the Ranter, and he along with my buddies Jack (cheeser), and Andy (snagged two balls at a Rockies BP earlier this season) will be the crew for the Mobile Blogging Unit.
What a freggin visual. It’s all about baseball baby.
Robert knows his way around the Tucson area well, it will be fun and an asset “?” :), to have him along. Thanks brotha.
Robert normally heads down to Tucson in his VW bus. But the bus is presently out of commission.
Robert sure would appreciate it.
A few blog entries back I had put the question out there, “What makes you happy”.
Here’s what she wrote:
Hey, man! It’s Kylie. Here’s what makes me happy.
My first snow since 2004. It has been snowing for about two hours now and it’s dying down, but I snagged a picture of it on my shirt to remember it. Plus there’s a real live snowball in my freezer made from snow collecting on our table. It all melted when it hit the ground but it was still supercool…Kylie
Thanks for sharing, the best part of what makes her happy is, snow is free. You can see the tiny little flakes on her red shirt, very cool. Enjoy your winter wonderland :) just kidding. Thanks for the picture Kylie.
Everyone, thanks for your click, you made a choice and I’m glad you ended up here…D
12/11/08 Rockpile Rant made the:
Ranter’s Bad Joke of the day
Question: Who makes more money a prostitute or a drug dealer?
C,mon, you know you love my sense of humor.
I’m still trying really hard to come out of this funk. It took me years to figure it out, but I get depressed around X-mas.
Is it just me? It really sucks.
I figured that out last holiday season. I was in a Target with Hunter when he noticed a Spiderman pinball machine. He mentioned to me how much he wanted it for X-mas.. It was at that moment I flashed back to a time in my childhood during X-mas.
I almost lost it in that store. My eyes welled up as an extremely painful memory was brought back to my attention.
Hunter got that pinball machine for X-mas and nobody smashed it in front of him. Nuff said on that.
Still no answer back from MLBlogs.com on the rankings. I just want to know the deal, and then I’ll keep rolling on as I always do. I’m wondering if my blog getting erased at one point this season had something to do with it?
As I said, I’m not mad, I just don’t understand.
Educate me please?
Oh hell yea. How cool would it be to win that set.
I’m in Section 151 of the Pavilion for all three games, and I’m still chasing that elusive live home run ball.
I officially claim 2009 as the year of the Ranter. I called shotgun first.
You can bet I’ll be there at Coors Field with my Jersey, hat, glove, camera, and ready to break some personal records, or break something.
Or, I get bored and move on.
My Denver Nuggets are kicking some serious butt this season. I almost feel bad for dogging Carmello Anthony a few blog entries back, especially when he scored 33 points in the third quarter during last nights game.
I know you’ve got it in you Melo, just bring it every night…I want to support you man. I really do.
Hey Melo, here’s a Pro you could learn a lot from.
Thank you Bally, I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to know that you took time out of your day to read my blog.
Also, your comment came at a time I really appreciated it. You Rock brotha.
Here is the comment I read from Bally’s Blog that inspired me to comment there:
Quote from Bally, “I like it because like I always say without you fans this game is nothing, so I like to give back to the fans and so I appreciate the support that they give on a day to day basis. Also, I will sign for anyone thats the least I can do”.
He said it was the least he could do. You see, Bally gets it. I hope he has a stellar year.
This dude is a class act. Hey Bally, the Rockies play the Nationals on Aug 18-20.
I always make batting practice and I’m not hard to spot. Come over and say hi. That would
mean more to me than you know.
Collin, I have officially added your blog to my sidebar. It’s really good.
Good luck, and I hope you have an outstanding season Sir.
Good guys don’t always finish last, or 48th.
Don’t worry all, I’m in there like swimwear. I just need to get past these damn holidays and all’s good.
12/10/08 Please read the updated comments for this blog.
I have to say congrats the bloggers that made the top 100 blogs. There is an incredible amount of talent in this Blogosphere. Most of the blogs I read made the top 100, and I’m proud of all of you. Great work.
I use them as my gauge.
I’m not sure what happened, I have made the top 30 fan blogs (top 10 the last few lists) for almost the whole season. I had the Rockpile Rant pegged to come in around the top 20 or so.
Sure, coming in # 48 is respectable, but not acceptable to me. I’m not sure where to go from here. It just doesn’t make sense. I can count 25 blogs in front of me that are less than a few months old, or are blogs that haven’t had an entry in months, or blogs I’ve never even seen before. Props to those blogs really, I’m not bitch’n, I guess I don’t know how the system works?? I blog daily, and rank almost every time higher than 48.
Some possible ideas for next Year
Best Blog Overall (with only MLBloggers allowed to vote on this one)
Hardest Working Blogger
Most Creative/Original Blog
Best New Blog, etc
Mark and the MLBlogs.com Crews Favorite Blog
MLBlogs can you please combine all of my blogs so I can have an accurate final ranking?
It’s all the same blog. Hook a brotha up? If you want to give me the number secretly, I’m cool with that, it’s not a popularity thing for me, it’s a personal thing. PLEASE
Below are my three blogs that are all really just this blog at different times of the season. I never changed my URL http://mlblogsbaseballsnatcher.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/green20floppy20hat-thumb-110×82-thumb-55×41-thumb-55×41-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×29-thumb-40×28.jpg
Rock Pile Rant…Colorado Rockies
One with Rockpile Rant #20, and one with Rockpile Rant…Postseason #34. This has been a crappy week I wish I could forget, and I was waiting for this list to cheer my ash up.
Guess that’s not going to happen. You guys and gals at MLBlogs.com are my hero’s, please tell me what happened?
An explanation would do wonders for me right now.
If the ranking numbers are the cumulation of all three of my blogs (the same blog), let me know and so be it. I’ll erase this entry.
I’m not sure where I go from here. Maybe I’m just completely out of line…sometimes I tend to teeter on the edge of it….D
